The first time I went travelling since getting a housecat, I brought him with me and kept him in the hotel room. (While I was gone, a tent that was big enough to let him move a little, but was still like being caged.) This seemed better than keeping him in the tiny cages that kennels have and being away from me.

Second time, I left him alone three nights (and got back late the fourth night) with plenty of food and water and two litter boxes. His food/water/litter situation was fine but he had freaked out in my absence and freaked out when I got back.

Third time, I had him boarded for several days. He didn't freak out but he was surly when I got back.

Fourth time, I left him alone for one night and he acted completely fine.

For two nights, would the cat be fine being alone? I don't like kennels because their cages are small compared to having the free run of an entire apartment.

Unless you have a weirdo Siamese like I do, then yes they usually should be okay being alone for a night or two.

I can't do that because:
My cat has a stupidly voracious appetite, yet at the same time doesn't want to eat if her people aren't around.

Speaking of "her people", I swear she has separation anxiety and other weird mental issues because she absolutely has to be a nuisance in some way. Whether it's freaking out about me being gone, or the fact that she has an obsession with bathrooms and cannot handle being around them. If I let her in the bathroom, she paws at the bathtub and ruins my cabinets. If I keep the bathroom door shut, she SCRATCHES at the door like a fucking asshole.

To make it worse, one time I went out for an evening, and when I came back my dumbass cat got herself stuck in my closet somehow. If your cat sounds suspiciously similar to being a dumbass like mine, then maybe keeping them alone without having someone going to your place for a quick check in may not be advisable.

...

Now back in the day people would just leave their cats outside. They wouldn't even have to feed them, the cat would just hang out in the barn and eat mice and whatnot and it was great.

Now people can't even leave their cats alone anymore? Like they're small children? When did this happen? How did this happen? You should be able to leave those things alone for like a week without any problem at all; that's pretty much the only reason to have them, because they're independent! You just clean their litter box once in a while and fill their food dispenser!

I'm...I'm sorry, it's just that nobody had sent me the memo that we'd warped nature to the point that people's cats can't eat without them around or be left alone for more than a day or two, I didn't even think that was possible, I'd assumed cats would outright reject that level of co-dependence. It's like the rise in dog obesity. It's unnatural and horrifying yet absurd, like when you see a clown standing completely still.

Your cat should be fine being left alone for as long as its food lasts, and it's considerate to make sure it has a place to go to the bathroom. It's not like it'll die, it'll figure it out. If you mean how long will your cat emotionally be fine, idk, have you tried sitting it down and having a heart to heart with it? Or seeing a cat therapist?

PS: I found this when I looked up "cat therapist"

Your cat should be just fine. Just leave enough food and water as well as make sure the kitty box is clean. He might be a little anxious alone but cats are pretty solitary animals and a lot tougher than you think. Go enjoy what you need to do!

I had a friend come over for the two weeks I was away. 1-2 nights, not bad, but more than that my cat needs someone to at least come over. Cats have schedules and theyre not unfeeling better off without humans shitheads like people think. Routine disruption can cause anxiety. Toys and playtime help cats to be happier, just like dogs.
Also, fuck no Im not going to just leave my cat outside. I dont have a barn and he could get hit by a car or someone could take him.

Well, for one, I can’t just let my cat “run around and eat mice” when I live in a crowded apartment complex next to a highway and filled with cars.

I want to find the option that makes the cat the most comfortable. There’s a trade off between discomfort from being caged up and worry from not having people around.

Cats can get severely stressed from moving to unfamiliar places and can impact their health. If you are just leaving for 3 days you can leave enough food and water in your own house and it will be fine. If you are away for a longer period of time the ideal solution would be someone checking on him and feeding him but this involves letting a person in your apartment while you are away, if this is not possible boarding would be the next most ideal solution.
If you are away often because of your job or something get him a buddy, contrary to what many people think cats are very social creatures and need companionship from another cat or a human. This will make him less prone to freak out when you are away or when they are in a unfamiliar place.

I’ve thought about a second cat. From what I’ve read cats are happiest if they have another cat they grew up with, but it can be really hit or miss if the second cat is introduced as an adult.
You heard right. Some cats will be happy, sure, but usually it's not worth the risk.

I keep trying to explain this to my fiance but I'm worried that I'll one day have him show up with a kitten in his arms after work. My cat is an absolute nutcase/bitch/niggercat and I could only imagine the stupid shit she'd start pulling if there was another cat in the household.

I also don't want another cat for fear of my current, adult retard teaching the kitten how to paw/scratch at my fucking bathroom door, or paw at my kitchen cabinets and make them go "BANG" and 'THUNK" at stupid hours in the night.

Oh it's a girl cat, that's even worse. Your only hope in that case would be for the kitten to be a dopey male ginger. Max chill temperaments in those ones, but boy cats have more health issues.

Need to make it clear you won't fuck around with another animal. I've seen one friend have a problem dog foisted on him by his fiancee (the dude didn't even like dogs and never had one before, this dog was a rescue and was absolutely hostile to everybody else) and a brother-in-law in the navy whose family keeps getting new cats and dogs (there's got to be like a dozen of them by now) despite him insisting not.

My cat also has an obsession with following me into the bathroom.

Does your cat have a water fountain? There is a specific cat behavior of trying to drink from taps and toilets. They instinctively dislike stagnant water because it is less hygienic than running water. My cat still follows me to the toilet, but after getting a water fountain the cat doesn't try to drink from taps anymore, and he drinks a lot more.

I still have to leave out bowls of water when I leave the cat overnight in case the water fountain or power should fail/other problems happen. When leaving the cat, basically leave out tons of water (like, ten bowls full of it) around the apartment and propping all doors open with heavy objects and food and water in every room to minimize chances of the cat getting itself trapped somehow.

I thankfully have no issues with my cat's drinking habits, she probably would love a water fountain but after some research I learned the majority of those fountains easily harbor mold and other bacteria, so I'd rather just play it safe having stagnant water. My cat's water bowl is pretty small as it is, needs to be filled at least once a day sometimes twice, and due to it's size I wash it pretty frequently.

As for drinking from taps/toilets, she thankfully avoids the toilet, and the only time I ever see her drinking bathroom water is if she gets into the bathtub after my fiance or I have had a shower. She likes to drink our stank water sometimes, I dunno lmao.

My cat has never done this. It's very strange. Even checked the backs of the furniture. Nothing. He does have a pressed cardboard scratcher that he uses very regularly. Wife checks and cuts his nails too, about every other week or so.

Also very strange that no matter what we do, he will not use his claws on us. Even when he's "feeling good" as cats do. You know, when they spread their toes apart or start kneading. The claws come out, but he doesn't use them. Not even to anchor himself on either of us.

I gave him some catnip this morning. He slapped me hard in the face between furiously NOMing. No claws then either.

I just consider we're blessed to have such a good boy. Got him as a small kitten from the county shelter. Had cats my whole life. Never ever got a bad one from the shelter.
