Okay. So, here’s the deal. Yes, I’m a dumb bitch. Yes, yes. I should suck all the dicks. But first, can someone help me?

I have a ten year old windows 7 desktop that I don’t really use anymore and I was like, “let me add some RAM to it and fuck around with some virtual machines because I have no life and live within four walls 24/7. What is grass even?”

I bought 16 more to add. Yes, it’s the old ass DDR3 shit. It’s literally just more of the same exact one I already have in the fucking thing. There shouldn’t be an issue. Right?

I slide it in. Turn it on. Works great. Checked the stats. Sitting at 24. Cool. I even browse the farms for a second and watch Chantal eating whatever shit she is shoving in her face today, and it’s going great. I’m getting ready to download Virtual Box. Birds are chirping and the wind whispers songs of my triumph.

Fucking dead.

Try to turn it back on. Can’t find my monitor. Fucking around for a bit trying to help it connect. Nothing. I take the RAM out and restart. Now it can find the monitor but nothing is there. Fucking nothing. I can’t access the bios. Nigga, I’m flabbergasted.

Should I hurl it out of my third story window and into the street below?

:( I have no idea what I’m doing.
Halppp peas.

Did you make sure to leave some RAM in? Also, do you unplug the machine while you're doing stuff inside of it?

For a start its 10 years old so yeet it secondly, if you're not getting the BIOS you might have knocked something on the board when installing the new RAM or it's drawn too much power & shorted (very unlikely). Might be worth unplugging it from the power, removing / replacing the CMOS battery (little button battery on the motherboard) then trying again. Also unplug & reseat all your RAM. Also you are a retard who should suck a bag of dicks etc etc.

Thanks I’ll try that!

It's possible your motherboard doesn't support over 8gb of ram, or you put them in the wrong slots, if it has four slots it goes like this:

1 3 2 4, for the order that the ram should go in, closest to farthest from the cpu

It’s an MSI Z87-G45. It’s an old PC but it can handle it. I’m not doing anything heavy anyway. I just needed the extra 8 for a VM.
Yup! I sorted them. But even if not, would that really crash my computer? I thought that it just wouldn’t work as optimally.
🎉 the more you know 🎉

Do you have another power supply on hand? Might want to change the fans in your system, too. My previous build went batshit when a fan on the CPU cooler started getting janky. I'd recommend just getting(or building) a new computer if you can. Keep the old one as a project.

You already solved your problem, it appears. Still recommend checking your power supply and all the fans.

Thanks! I replaced the power supply altogether like a year ago when I changed the case. I thought a clear case was a good idea at 18 but I was wrong.

I totally need new fans though! For sure. I was going to just upgrade but who has money to blow for a graphics card right now? Shit is nuts.
Thanks, fren!

You're sure the RAM is literally identical between the old 8 and the new 16? Identical model number? Difference in density, ranks, speed, etc... can all cause major problems. Also, you said you added 16, is that 1 x 16 or 2 x 8? The 8, is that 1 x 8 or 2 x 4? That can be a major difference.

Also, check to see if your BIOS has any updates out. You'll want to apply those, then maybe try adding the 8 back in.
