I want to have a thread for sharing legitimately difficult and fun challenges in vidya and not just lame cheevo bait. Most of these are shooters because that's my forte, but I'm really curious to see what people have come up with especially in other genres. Expect hardcore sperging and lots of autistic stickers ITT.
  • Finish a Tyson Run of Doom or Doom 2
    • Hard mode: Fast monsters AKA Grandmaster Tyson
Every list needs a Doom challenge and this one's my favorite. For the uninitiated the Tyson run is unlike a typical pistol only or pacifist run much quicker and more exciting: berserk packs and chainsaw are allowed and except for lost souls at least one of every monster has to be killed before exiting the level. It's considered a speedrun challenge but still plenty fun without putting yourself on the clock, and because it's Doom there's myriad wads you can throw in to spice things up if you like. I'd pay money to see a Tyson run in Hideous Destructor, for example.
  • Win a co-op game of Killing Floor Hell on Earth difficulty without buying any weapons from the trader
    • Bonus challenge: armor counts as a weapon
This one's a lot of fun because it forces the team to constantly move to search for weapon pickups and then dynamically adjust the team's perk composition to fit what weapons are picked up and because the emphasis is (at least early on) about finding weapons it forces the team to risk taking suboptimal or outright poor kiting paths to look for weapons pickups. It's also resistant to 5p berserk 1p med kiting teams because the berserkers are all going to be stuck with chainsaws. It also keeps the earlier waves challenging because the team is going to have severely limited weaponry early on. The downside is it basically requires level 6 perks as a prerequisite, but if you're playing on HoE you should be L6 already. A mutator for players to drop all weapons on death and for dropped weapons to not despawn at wave start is recommended.
  • Beat Hotline Miami 2 on hard mode with the lowest score possible
This is a really interesting one I stumbled onto on accident. The idea is self-explanatory, but actually doing it is surprisingly interesting and difficult; indeed so far I'm only at Act 4. Getting the lowest score means: No combos ever, gun kills only, and avoid moving as much as possible to keep that 'mobility' score low. It sounds tedious, but it's actually really enjoyable and feels like a whole new game.
  • Ironman Jagged Alliance 2 1.13
    • Bonus challenge: one squad/one merc only
Expert difficulty is the minimum recommended, but if you're a bad enough dude Insanity certainly lives up to its name. This is better than most ironman challenges because JA2 is really well suited to ironman play, perhaps even better than xcom since it's hypothetically possible to recover from more seemingly unwinnable situations and it feels like the game was designed to naturally accommodate defeat well with such things as surrendering, enemy interrogations, and many, many ways to skin the cat of rebellion. Be careful with your configuration, small changes can have a profound effect on difficulty. When I tried this challenge I enabled zombies and it basically halved the difficulty in one fell swoop. If you're really hardcore, you can limit yourself to a single squad or even just one merc. The "Shadow Challenge" is a Jagged Alliance classic that synergizes very well. However you do it expect to sink a lot of hours into this one.
  • Beat the map "Hangtime2" in Quake 3 Defrag
    • Hard mode: Use VQ3 physics
Quake 3 is the purest and most refined shooter ever made, and for that reason possibly the best. So what does Defrag do? It takes all the killing out and turns it into parkour for nerds. Defrag has probably the highest skill ceiling of any game ever made, and Hangtime2 is easily one of, perhaps even the hardest map ever made for it. Videos like this make it look easy, but by the time you finally beat the map you will be very, very good a bhopping. You also may be unable to return to any other FPS when you realize how shitty their movement systems are compared to Quake's.
  • Complete a James Bond run of Rainbow Six (Raven Shield or earlier)
    • Bonus challenge: use the .50AE Deagle
The old Rainbow Six games like Rogue Spear used to be some of the most and authentic and punishing shooters on the market, so what better way to pay tribute than to forsake all that "realism" malarkey for a sharp suit and a license to kill? Complete the campaign to an old R6 game on veteran or elite difficulty with only a single operative and a handgun. Bonus points if your operative's a Limey.
  • Beat Counter-Strike: Condition Zero on Expert difficulty
Nothing fancy here, just one of the most difficult challenges I've ever encountered in any game ever. CS 1.6 shooting mechanics will never get old and you will certainly be very good at them by the time you finish this. Protip: Get Maverick, get flashbangs.
  • Use your PRO GAMER CRED from completing one of these challenges to successfully get laid.
    • Hard mode: if you are also male

I beat the entire Dark Souls series with only the keyboard.
I knew someone who got a kill in csgo using a steering wheel and dance pad. Weird controller inputs are a field ripe for exploration.

Surely a Tyson run of Doom 2 would be impossible, as you can only defeat the Icon of Sin with rockets. I have seen speedrun videos where it's technically possible if you got hit by a dozen Arch Viles at once so you get throw through the opening, but the odds are a million to one.

Ever wanted to get to level 100 in Destiny Islands? No? This guy's autistic brother did.

@Marissa Moira snort an adderall and tell us about your billion platinum trophies
I'm thinking about starting another account doing both Monster Hunter games again but it's a massive time investment looking for crowns. The game is getting no more updates so I would need to time it around an event to get all the crowns for the lesser monsters which would cut down time.

I also would need either a second PS4 or a PS5 so I could party up with my existing character to kill all the shit for my new character.

Romancing SaGa 2 has mostly basic trophies for unlocking classes and beating bosses, but it has a cool one in which you fight the final boss without activating the final timeskip and becoming the final heir. I had no idea it was even possible so I attempted to do so and succeeded. That was a fun one.

I've beaten the final boss in MGS2 while using a controller and a mouse simultaneously(my right stick was broken so I had to control the sword with a mouse).

I’ve 100%ed and platinum’d Spyro Reignited Trilogy. And I got all the skill points, too.

I used to go for all the skill points in those Spyro games. Ratchet & Clank as well.

I did no materia in FF7 but that isn't much of a challenge. I just couldn't do Ruby or Emerald. I think Ruby might have been doable if I tried harder. But without materia Emerald's timer always got me before I could do enough damage. I actually never used the underwater materia because I didn't know about it. Or if I did Game Informer's infamous strategy guide steered me wrong. But since I was autistic about full sets of mastered materia and went out of my way to grind AP for more mimes I never had a problem with Emerald beyond aire tam storm. That attack does damage based on the amount of materia you have equipped. So without any materia it does zero damage.

But since he gives out massive AP and I had full blown materia atsimu I always overloaded myself with whatever I wanted to level up.

Also, I think the guides are wrong about enemy skill mastering. That enemy that supposedly never shows up was pretty common for me.

Vincent sucks without materia. I stopped using him because he kept dying.

I don't know if I ever made it. But I did try to beat all levels in Shanhai for Game Boy. Some of the levels have special effects, like ZAP. It gives you lightning sound effects. I think a few are just easter eggs though with no puzzle.

What's this platinum trophy shit everyone keeps going on about? It sounds like cheevos and we all know cheevos are lame and easy.

What the hell was your hand placement on the controller doing that?
Does beating COD:WaW on veteran without breaking a controller count?
Fake news. We all know that counter-sniper section in Stalingrad is impossible.

Platinum trophies are Sony's version of 100%ing or a full gamer score for a game.

They also in a few cases reward digital rewards for your account.

If you get the platinum trophy for Final Fantasy 7 Remake for example you're rewarded with 18 different avatars of the characters.
