CN China Limits Minors to Just Three Hours of Online Gaming a Week

China’s regulators announced a new set of tighter regulations over the country’s games industry, including limiting the number of hours that minors can play.

The new rules are aimed at curbing excessive indulgence in games and protecting minors’ physical and mental health. Online game providers can only offer services to minors for an hour on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, Xinhua reported, citing a notice released by National Press and Publication Administration. They can also play only an hour a day during holidays.

The new rules are part of a broader government crackdown on technology companies in the country. Tencent Holdings Ltd., China’s largest games company, had already begun to implement similar restrictions.

Earlier this month, state media published forceful critiques of the industry and at one point labeled games “spiritual opium.” That description was later removed, but share prices plunged out of concern for further restrictions.

Someone is preparing the youth for war. Of course, there are ways to circumvent this but usually, when the government is *this* invested in what kids are doing in their bedrooms, that means they need new meat for the upcoming war.

Even the noblest of deeds, like the Soviets and Nazi youth movements that advanced health culture and "strong body, strong spirit" concepts weren't doing it because they cared about the health of the nation per se. They cared enough but they cared because the country needed motivated slaughter fodder.

I agree with this, in a way. I wouldn't set a hard and fast limit, but kids under 18 should no longer be playing video games. They are not the same games we played as kids. It's not the violence, it's not the exposure to adult-content or themes, it's because it is psychological manipulation for the purposes of pushing gambling on to children. The odds are stacked against them in more ways than people - even most gamers, realise.

Screen time, gaming, internet have all been corrupted in worse ways than ever imagined. The worst we had as kids was grammar nazi's and the odd, easy-to-spot peadophile. Look at what kids are exposed to nowadays, in gaming alone.

Do you think it's acceptable for you young child to be gambling on fortnite while hearing a 17 minute speech by MLK? (The speech isn't bad, but it's introducing your child to the concept of racism, which may have never crossed their mind until this point)

I don't think you could really stop kids from playing video games, even with a gaming ban.

Putting all games under the same blanket is also a dangerous idea since many games that lack predatory practices rely on purchases from families to be able to continue making games. Behind the video games are people who have families to feed. If kids under 18 stopped playing video games, many gaming companies and video game devs would take a hit, especially the small indie developers - the ones less prone to pushing gambling than big companies like Epic Games.

Kids should be able to play video games, but parents should teach them how to do so in moderation. It's kind of a test of discipline that I think Chinese parents should be able to do better than American parents. If the parents aren't failures, they won't end up with a kid who's addicted to vidya like the American soyboy but someone "normal".

DumbDude42 makes a great point - the Chinese internet lacks most of the shit you're concerned about because it's heavily monitored and doctored. They've also edited video games that release in China to meet their strict requirements.

Also three hours is lame, having government-mandated restrictions are retarded. Parents should be the one deciding that kind of rule since they're the one who are raising the child. Fuck the gov't for pulling this hand-holding shit.

Have you played console games (the main medium for kids) lately? Every game is infested with gatcha shite, whether or not you have to pay for it, the games use predatory practices to keep you engaged, because gaming is no longer about stories or interesting gameplay, it's about pushing agendas, creating gambling addicts and unmoral faggots.

When i was a wee lad, shagging a hooker in GTA and ripping a spine out in MK were the worst things imaginable. Now we see gay, lgbtq agendas pushed on kids. Gaming is now a platform to reach young audiences, and nothing more. Games are just a medium from transmitting the message.

I agree with this, but like i said above, it isn't as simple as "johnny, you can only play Baldurs gate for another 4 hours". Nowadays Johnny is addicted and will fight tooth and nail, and often lie in order to keep getting a hit on his addiction. I will concede that it depends on the games Johnny plays. Nintendo shit might be alright, I stay away from Nintendo because I'm not a child or pedophile.

It was a good point.

It shouldn't be government mandated but the government needs to restrict these video game publishers/designers in to adding elements in to the game over which the player has no control, for the sole purpose of pushing sales. For example; EA monitors your vocal patterns on your headset, the more angry you get the harder they make the game, they then push 'buffs' on you via sales and/or DLC, so that you're more likely to purchase these items.

"If we give the government the ability to change and limit what media we can consume, we can finally save our children! Anything for some short-term safety!"

It's almost as if it's a parenting problem, and not something you can legislate? We need to consider the effects gambling elements within games, of course, but the titles that have these mechanics often have mature ratings.

It's retarded to think that we should give the government the ability to decide what we can consume. I feel that by using the Farms you should know how precious and necessary the freedom of expression is, regardless of the content.

It does come down to parenting, somewhat. It's the sleezy predatory and lazy practices that have infected gaming which is far more damaging to a child than any violence or nudity. Fortnite isn't rated mature, neither is FIFA. Most of the time the parents aren't aware of how bad some of the practices are. Hell, most gamers aren't even aware. Titles and ratings do not prevent a kid from playing a game. I played Fallout 1 and 2, GTA, MK and a whole host of other 18+ games because i knew it was just digital violence.

Do these kids know that digital gambling is not the same as real gambling? Because it is the same, and creating those addition loops early in kids will be devastating in their later lives. And it's not just gaming that's guilty here.
It's retarded to think that we should give the government the ability to decide what we can consume. I feel that by using the Farms you should know how precious and necessary the freedom of expression is, regardless of the content.
I do not think the government should step in and say how long any one can play a game. But they absolutely need to step in and sort out the illegal way that gambling is pushed on kids.

I know i sound like Helen Lovejoy with "Won't somebody think of the children" but it's more that gambling has an age restriction (18 in the UK) yet we allow publishers and devs to create games AIMED at those under 18 that contain gambling. Fifa ultimate team is a classic example. EA should be burned to the ground.

They are building a country based off of pure performance, your feelings don't matter the bottom line does. If the west starts fucking its own ass even more they might be very successfull with that. Does someone know how to beg for mercy in Chinese?

Porn is already completely illegal in China.
And yet I can go ahead to any Chinese 3 to 5 star hotels and its the world is my oyster.
However If I want to have my dick working afterwards I sure as hell not going for that type of Clam Chowder.

Now about Pr0n Industry in China

Why is this happening.

BECAUSE MONEY.... TALKS....

To get anything done in China (as well in many parts in SE Asia) you have to grease the palms of so many "district officials" to get things done. In this case local/ civil authorities will look away with enough green in their hands.

If I ever have kids, they aren't going to be allowed to anywhere near Current Year 'games' and especially not online games.

I let them ruin my life getting hopelessly addicted to WoW, and if given the chance stopping some kid from ruining their best years playing some shitty game is the least I can do.

I'm mixed on this.
On one hand, this is violating personal freedoms of the citizens.
On the other hand, online addiction is a horrible thing that happens quite often and it's damaging all those kids.
Especially online gaming is something that people, especially kids, are not mentally equipped to moderate.
Some can moderate, most can't, it's a drug, it's hard to control this stuff.
If kids can't and won't moderate, that will have horrible long term consequences for the future of society, we don't even know how horrible because kids today are the first generation that is growing up with online gaming available since birth.
I think some restrictions would be good, the question is the degree of the restrictions.
