So recently I discovered that, of all things, there is a Rainbow Brite NES game... that apparently came out in 2018 but was in fact officially licensed (by the toy company, not by Nintendo). I have not gotten a chance to play this, so if anyone does, is it any good?
I also recently remembered the existence of this He-Man fangame on Game Jolt. While its not my ideal He-Man game (I would personally prefer an RPG or something), it's a fun beat-em-up (I believe it uses the Beats of Rage engine) and the character selection is like a fever dream... why is Skeletor playable? Why is Lion-O playable? (That said I contacted the author on Facebook and wondered if he would consider adding John Blackstar or Marshall Bravestarr, because let's go crazy).
...........
These got me thinking: a lot of cartoons are actually ripe for video game possibilities, but.... well, in some cases a video game just never happened. Or when it did, it's not my ideal (sorta like the He-Man example).
Just for example: I know there's been at least four G.I. Joe games.... but what confounds me is that none of them have been a turn-based strategy game. If anyone here has ever played the Jagged Alliance series... that's basically what I'm suggesting: do that, just with G.I. Joe characters.
But IMO the ultimate missed opportunity is Thundercats. To my knowledge there's only been one Thundercats game, a so-so platformer for old computers.
I once did a long post about what makes Thundercats awesome, and the biggest thing I highlighted was the setting of Third Earth... which, I mean, its already a cartoon about refugee aliens who are trying to survive on a mysterious, seemingly-primitive world with hints that it was once more advanced.... am I the only person who sees the potential for a Breath of the Wild style game in that? (admittedly more potential since there would be actual locations you could pull from and not just a bunch of samey shrines).
And in general, part of me would love to play a game that looks and feels like an eighties cartoon... in a sincere way. I've been told that there are some that try this, but they always come off to me like they're being ironic and also like they don't really understand what made cartoons of that era so good. I don't want a freaking parody.
AAAAAAANYWAY.
So, do you guys have any cartoons you think should get turned into a video game? Or in general do you have a backseat game-design idea for a fangame you'd like to see?
P.S. .... admittedly I thought about making a "no anime" rule, but I won't. But keep in mind: the reason I'm highlighting western work is a lot of western animation has never gotten a video game at all, or in a few cases the video games are less than ideal (Mighty Max anyone?)
If you're gonna choose an anime, try to pick something that legitimately hasn't been done to death--we don't need "I think DBZ needs a fighting game" as if there's not already fifty or so.
