Doug got cancelled by Pride progressives for being an evangelical Christian and not shutting up about it publicly. When he joined CG he thought he'd found friends who would back him against cancel culture assholes for his problematic beliefs.
He realized that wasn't true somewhere around the time CG tried to get his EWJ deal canceled over SJW/Pride shit and they went after Mike over a tweet or sooner. This is well documented.
Firstly, I think boosting Trump shouldn't really be a CG focus. You don't have to like Trump to understand that mainstream comics have gone to hell and creative freedom is being stifled. I think you can have Trump books in CG, but it's silly to think Trump is the most important thing to CG. It's possible to hate SJWs but not be a Trump fanboy (no, really, it is).

Doug has hosted friendly discussions with LGBT folk since before CG.
His problem isn't with gay people. He has fringe (by 2021 standards) beliefs about homosexuality that he separates from his feelings about people who are gay.

I do think Bernie's antiquated ideas are dangerous however and I wish my friends would clue into that fact.
