#Comicsgate - The Culture Wars Hit The Funny Books!

To be fair Jon, that's kinda the "Comicsgate way," isn't it? I don't think you wanna go there. Liam really isn't doing anything different than far bigger names in CG have been doing for a long time.
Liam has the added burden of having been revealed this week, as a false flagging faggot.

Not ideal just before you start asking for funds.

Well it’s like Edwin Boyette said before, Indiegogo has always been a pretty left leaning organization and this isn’t the first time JDA has experienced problems on that platform. Like the time they shadowbanned his Dynamite book or when they shadowbanned SMiller’s Trump book. So, it could be because of politics or something personal against him. I’m sure there are other examples, I just can’t think of any right now.
They're both pretty left leaning organizations, IMO. That's why I think the boycott is obsolete, and probably never made much sense in the first place. There is always the potential of you getting fucked regardless of which one you use.

True enough, but I think the Xenotype debacle probably hurt him worse in the eyes of people who know who he is.

I think it might be difficult to gauge the impact of this outside of CG talking heads because, unlike somebody like Matt Jarbo, Liam doesn't have 100K+ Youtube subscribers, and Boy Island isn't exactly doing gangbusters to begin with. That is to say, Liam fell from grace a while back, and there's not much lower he can go.

You're absolutely right this shit ain't gonna help him recover though. He'd have to undergo a massive attitude/personality change for that to happen.

You know, if Meyer had his way and finally got his hands on a public domain Superman, it would probably end up resembling one of those insane, campy Jimmy Olsen comics from the late 50s

His recent take on Batman was so incredibly weird and unique that I think his ideas for Superman would be equally beyond anything ever seen before.
I think he would fuck up Superman even more royally than Batsy.
Within his limited tastes, Meyer has always shown a sort of affinity with comics dealing with the military or the street vigilante with no actual superpowers. He's also firmly in the Marvel camp with DC whooshing right over him. When referring to DC, Batman is the DC character he talks about with some respect because he has no patience for sci-fi titles such as Green Lantern or Superman. I would love to hear his elevator pitch for Supes.... it would probably be a riot compared to his ludicrous "Wayne-runs-a-Bat-Themed-RentACop-Agency" take.

Liam did a short follow up stream today mostly making excuses for yesterday, fighting his chat and pretending that his child crawled for the first time ever while he was streaming. He ends the stream with what seems to be manufactured drama about his kids being missing.

- Liam couldn't provide any of the evidence yesterday because he didn't know about the TUG stream and had to get out of bed to get on it. He has just enough time to put on his suit before it started. He had no time to prepare.
- Liam says that if people had watched his streams, they would have seen all of the evidence anyway.
- Liam claimed that on three specific instances he had offered police reports and the evidence to unnamed persons. These people according to Liam refused to even take Liam's evidence.
- Liam claimed that on his past strikes of channels. That before he struck the channels, he begged the people in question to put disclaimers in their videos to say that Liam was not appearing in those videos. And they refused.
- Liam once again claimed to have been repeatedly threatened through his phone.
- Liam claimed that three girls were having a sleepover at his house and that they were "scared". Liam did not explain what he was talking about.
- Liam claims that he could not use a business address for his DCMA. That because he was not a giant mega-corporation he could not use a business address.
- Liam mentioned the location of the house where he claims to have been doxed and said it was "one of his houses" where he apparently does business. He also mentioned the name of the community the house is in.
- The stream ends with Liam saying that his kids are missing and that "if anything has happened there will be fucking hell to pay". This seems like out and out fake drama nonsense. Just like when he ran out of the stream long ago to stop the stabbing.
---------------------

The address that Liam was supposedly doxed at is a large house that was recently sold and only changed hands in January. Its not clear (at least to me) that anyone actually lives in that house right now . Given how recently the house changed hands, its seems less than clear that Liam could not have ever been said to have lived there. It also seems rather unlikely that if Liam owned a big house in a good neighborhood, that he would be living in the tiny ghetto dwelling he is currently living in.
-----------------------
EDIT - Liam also tweeted out the following today:

"I have now offered three separate platforms evidence of my claims, including police reports only to have my offers rebuffed. I am done discussing this matter in any capacity in a public setting. People are too invested in the narrative. Its all Wilful Ignorance & Victim Blaming."

The guy just can't stop lying.

Does anyone think that Zack’s latest book is going to get funded? Back when CG was running at full steam YBZ would have blown past the 25k goal within an hour.

It probably will. The bigger question is how relevant the story about the Ukraine invasion will be in two years when the book finally ships. Has his book about the pandemic lock-downs even shipped yet? His shameless opportunism is really embarrassing. The sample art looks like it was shat in 15 minutes before the campaign launched.

those actually shipped out pretty quick for a YBZ campaign.

There was some friction where Jon del Arroz was declaring during the Liam efap/Graveyard Shift 4/GSTFMT closeout stream that he had no choice but to bring his campaign to Kickstarter and Jon Malin declared that even if JDA had no choice, he would never support anyone or anything on Kickstarter "but you do you man". lol. Can't be bothered to find the timestamp though.

Who could have guessed that this would be the CG landscape going into 2022?

In other crowdfunded comic news:

1647177482123.png

Jon Malin's Graveyard Shift IV campaign closed (as previously mentioned) at $160,023, a definite step down from the $263,383 total for the first Graveyard Shift III campaign or the $386,000 total including the variant. I didn't back GY3 myself, but whatever it was does not seem to have resulted in customers being interested in what happens next and it's safe to conclude that interest in the franchise has peaked. Malin's other series Godlike was the highest funding CG comic of 2021; whether interest and customer enthusiasm will shift to this new series remains to be seen.

Finally, the nine creators talked into the IndieVolt/Spencer's Gifts* distribution grift where they were talked into printing 3000 copies of their comics each and it turned out that Spencer Gifts had never heard of them did what anyone in their situation would do and brand themselves THE LONGSHOTS , a brotherhood formed in fudge as well as schemes and scams, complete with a plucky underdog narrative about how they'll put it all on the table to either offload their thousands of comics or get f-f-felted.

THE LONGSHOTS

WHEN 7 CREATORS RISK IT ALL AND COME UP SHORT THERE'S NOTHING LEFT FOR THEM TO DO BUT LET IT RIDE!

Sitting at 41 backers at 3000 it doesn't seem like this is going to happen, but buying 9 comics for $25 a piece is actually cheaper than the pricing of comparative Marvel & DC comics - a (partially) Comicsgate first. Shame it had to take people being out tens of thousands of dollars to do it.

"Grab an oar gays" its shit like this that is why I hate Malin. What else is JDA supposed to do in this situation Malin, please enlighten us. I also see the irony of Malin continuing to use Indiegogo even though they deplatformed his fellow comicsgator JDA. Its so terrible when it happens to Malin, but when it happens to JDA Malin's reaction: Meh "but you do you man".

To be clear, it's $25 for 9 (floppy) comics, not 9 comics for $25 each. Looks like shipping is another $10. Still a relatively good deal though at least on a per-page basis.

But…

The Bundle includes All 9 Titles that were to be apart of the now infamous Spencer's Deal. Gods Hand, Only Death can Save Us, Hybrids

Random capitalization, incorrect punctuation, mixing up "apart" and "a part" which pretty much changes the sentence to mean the opposite of what they intended. I'm not really interested in buying books (comics or otherwise) from illiterates.

YoungRippa will be the guest on Rekieta tonight.

The "Rippaverse" Idea Guy™ talk starts deep in the stream at 2:54:20. Not much has changed from his usual pitch. A lot of what he's "going to do" and talk of colleagues he doesn't actually have and customers he hasn't actually earned. Rekieta, like nearly every white guy Eric July has likely met in the past ~10 years, thinks this is just positively darling and - with all the probity and incisiveness one might expect from a drunken attorney with five kids from a small law firm in central Minnesota - entirely fails to challenge or substantively interrogate any the based black lolbertarian's audacious hopes in the realm of comics apart from what Nick would do if he were creating a comic which rather controversially involves having some of it done so he could, you know, show it off to prospective customers/supporters. This, Nick piggy-backs on their talk of the oft-heard refrain...

Can we see some concept art, maybe, M-Mr. J-July?

This common ask is addressed shortly into the discussion and the answer is "no" but lest you think him niggardly he claims to have good reason for this. You shan't be seeing any concept art until he's ready to take your money off of you. But, by all means keep giving him attention and hyping him and his vaporware and listening to him drone on about his Ideas™ because that in no way is asking something (attention, time) from you that he should feel in any way inclined to offer compensation, however trivially, as a show of good faith and sincerity. That would be, like, weird and not money-related. He has no ideology for that. All this hype-conjuring is more, like, just the normal attention he's entitled and accustomed to and which you should just give him without question or reservation because he's Eric July and he has an Idea™ and he used to "bang" but now he's on The Blaze.

Genre fiction's most autistically diligent word-worker / doorstopper manufacturer? Bane of trees everywhere? One of the most prolific and popular fictional universe machines of our time? Based Merman far too pure to ever finish A Song of Ice and Fire for GRRM? Fantasy novelist who just raised $27M+ on Kickstarter? Sorry, never heard of him. But, I have an Idea™, fellow nerds...

Q: Dear, imminent eminent storytelling entrepreneur and respected Internet Thought Leader across politics, economics, society, and soon-to-be culture, sir. What would you consider to be some of your most significant influences across the various genres and mediums of fiction and non-fiction? aka What do you read?
A: I dunno. Teenager stuff ...And then we're just gonna initially sort of use that as a launch point into various formulas of entertainment experiences if you will and thereupon jump it off into the quote-unquote superhero elements of pop culture which I will eventually parlay into the dominant culture of politics and beyond.

Sure.

Simple Zack continues his strategy of producing comics under the misapprehension that people care what he thinks about a current event and would like to pay $25 to read his opinion in comic form. If I wanted to read a comic written by an out of touch retard who has a bone to pick with current year society, Chick tracts have more entertainment value (and often better art) than 26 pages of disposable Zack characters letting us know who the real Nazis are. I'd bet real money the Ukraine war will be over by the time this one ships.

Part of me wishes he'd stick to what brought him to the dance and the other part of me hopes he continues to stray from it so we can make fun of shit like this, Also, he recently revealed it costs him around $25k to produce a single floppy.

$25,000 to produce a comic about a fucking TikToker with characters named SKID and MARK. :stress:

According to YBZ art is finished and the book will be at the printers by the end of the campaign. I can see him making a couple Ukraine war tourist videos to push the book at the people interested in those type of videos

[Dear Facebook,]

That was actually the best Rekeita stream I've seen in a while. I have zero problem with what Rippa's doing or how he's doing it, in fact I think the risk(s) he's taking with the Rippaverse concept should be admired. I've pointed out his dumb takes on Tim Pool's show and disagree with wasting any of his limited time on re-inventing the wheel with a standalone funding platform but again, he's risking his own money building his own thing and not asking rando sycophants on the internet to take that financial risk for him.

If there was more of that attitude, CG (and everything else) would be in a much better place. I'm rooting for him.

DISCLAIMER: competing with IGG/KS is still stupid and comics people are still f'ing weirdos
