That is entirely dependent upon the publishing deal that the mangaka has. Rumiko Takahashi owns her own work though Lumic Productions. That's why she has "fuck you money." Similarly, Hayao Miyazaki owns all his own shit too.
However, not all mangaka are that lucky.
On the flip side, there are western comic book artists that own their own creations too. Image Comics was set up to cater to the "creator owned" model.
And then, of course, I'd be remiss to not point out in this particular thread that there are people who simultaneous own their own shit, but are struggling because they are lazy fucks. We call that Comicsgate.

They largely have the option though. If their work makes a ton of money, it is rare that they cannot live on it for the rest of their lives unless they are bad with money. A money maker is a money maker.
In the US, your work could make billions and you might see a penny here and there tops.

There is being lazy and there is being a bad worker. Toriyama called himself lazy (and he was to an extend correct) but he had a work ethic too.

This attitude is part of why Patreon was derided for years as "hipster welfare". Guys like Richard and Ethan don't want to make and ship a product for their fans, they want to fluff their egos with gay ops and ibs and get paid to exist.
The talent that Zack had that EVS saw was a talent for following EVS around and saying "excellent choice, sir". EVS admitted that Comicsgate was just a way for him to get toadies that he could be the "leader" of of. He doesn't want to write or draw. He wants to be the leader of a group, and a group of guys like Riley and Richard is the best he could do. Guys like this want to be on top of the mountain so badly they refuse to admit it's a mountain of shit.

Ethan also dug up some old DM receipts from an e-girl who got YF drunk while he was going through a divorce, messages that Ethan already knew about but ignored when YF was still his “friend.”

Given that she was living with them at the time, he would have known exactly when her birthday was. Maybe he was trying to justify all the questionable things he had said about her previously? Bubblegum Crisis is from 1987. It was one of the first anime series released unedited and subtitlted in the US. The english name is a legacy of certain people deciding to do a literal translation of the Japanese title Baburugamukuraishisu into english when the title was sold overseas. And overly literal translations from other languages often sound strange.
Alot more care is put into selling things internationally these days in Japan in terms of titles and so on. But in 1987, this series was strictly intended for the Japanese market with no real thought of selling it beyond that.
These are not things that grandpa Richard understands. He has always been mentally stuck in the 1990s. I mean just look at the age of the comics he features in the banner for his youtube channel. I don't think even one of them is from past 2000.
