Sounds totally like sensible discipline to me. Maybe the kid should have done some chores like mix their own chemicals to watch clothes and cook a banquet for 20 so they receive 10 less lashes.

Thank you for this post! I dont really follow comics gate shit anymore, and I have alot of gaps in the whole thing.

Just to clarify EVS, a comic books artist tried to cut out the middle man, do basically pre sales of books. But I asume he has burn out and found he could make money by streaming and shit.

Hes not making the books.

But now a black dude in texas is making comic books with out a big publisher (I know about him from the dax drama) and why isnt EVS shmoozing with this dude they both love comics right?

It's even funnier than that. EVS and Eric were "friends"? On good terms at least and he even did a cover for one of Eric's books. But he is too retarded and too prideful to seize a golden opportunity and tried to latch on the dax drama and was mostly ignored by Eric thus his current state.

Half the people are pointing out that what that mom did wasn't discipline, it was a beatdown and the other half, including EVS are still defending it as fine. His autist kid is cooked when she starts acting out of line if that's what he considers acceptable punishment

Let me preface this by saying that both the events in the video and Ethan's reaction to it are unconscionable.
What we're seeing is obvious abuse and anyone defending it is surely a piece of shit.

Having said that, why is anyone fucking surprised that Ethan is alright with this? He was raised in a house of nine children by a mentally ill Mormon who couldn't make ends meet and forbid his wife from working. His entire upbringing was a form of child abuse. His idea of proper parenting is undoubtedly fucking twisted.

I'm not sure if many of you are aware that Ethan's brother Noah is also a cartoonist and has drawn several acclaimed independent comics, mostly biographical/slice-of-life type things you often see from artsy-fartsy publishers like Fantagraphics. One of his more popular books is his autobiographical graphic novel One Dirty Tree (a pun on "133", the street address of the Van Sciver home, which had a large dead tree in the front yard).

Noah gives readers a glimpse of life at Casa Van Sciver, like how the floors of the house were rotted and Noah's feet would get large splinters in them if he didn't wear shoes.

One of the most talked about episodes in the book shows young Noah being made to bathe in a tub full of dirty dishes.
When his mother feels he didn't do a good enough job, she calls for the patriarch to re-bathe him with a bucket.

Now, I'm not comparing this to what that asshole is doing to the child in the video, but it comes as no surprise to me that a person raised in a household like Ethan's would have a rather skewed view of what constitutes abusive behavior towards a child. Ethan has said his family was very poor and that his dad had severe mental health issues, so I'm inclined to believe there were worse things going on in that home than what Noah felt comfortable sharing with an audience.

So, yeah. Ethan's attitude is not shocking.

This is arguably worse than that though, because I don't think this mom is gonna attack Eric July for him. This is more of him expressing a raw disgusting opinion on something, than him trying to court somebody for support. You can't even say he has an ulterior motive here. This is "true EVS" you are seeing. True EVS is gross.

I've not read the entire thing, but Ethan is featured in a few of the pages I've been able to find online.
