Hi everyone, it's your boy Zach, and this is my review of Terminal One by these guys right here. So this was gonna be an Eric July video because he said something stupid and then right before I was about to do the video he said something else that was stupid and I thought, wait a minute, is this just a guy who says stupid things? Because nobody in mainstream comics considers him to be a real publisher. He's along the lines of whoever it is that publishes the comics you only find in dentist offices.
So anyway, while I was formulatingthatvideo, I started thinking about this comic which I had just readyesterday andhow, and even Jawbreakers, and howactuallyI guess this is gonna turn into a video about Eric July. So Eric July, his latest schtick is notthe Parallel Economy. His latest schtick is like, Mass Appeal, that's from the past.
Nobody can do that shit anymore. It's all about the niche. Yeah, we focusing on the niche.
Okay, so that's another common English word that Eric Julydoes not understand.Niche is not whenyou decide tosell to everyone and then you lose99% of your customers. The remaining customers are not a niche.
Niche is likepaddleboarders. There's a paddleboarding circuit and they follow the waves from, you know, resort to resort andwe're going to create abackpack for paddleboarders that has all their accoutrements. That's a niche.
You starting off with 42,000 customers and ending up with about 600repeat customers a few years later. That's not a niche. That's you losing all of your customers.
But one thing I've been thinking aboutis that, you know, I've been, I think, veryWhat is that?Very forthright about discussing the reality that80, 90% of my sales were not because people just really thought I was the best comic creator ever, but because they wanted to bother Heather Ontos because it was culture warbonds, war bonds as Perch says. And that hurt, but we have to deal with that. We can't just decide thatif I can't win that means nobody can win because people win all the time.
There are massive successes. But one of the things that Eric July said in his video where he called black creators beggars isyou know, it's like you spending all your time trying to play in someone else's sandbox. Why don't you play in my litter box? I mean, that's not exactly what his quote was, but he can'tcomprehend that people would want to work for Marvel in DC because they grew up loving the characters and they wouldn't want to work inhis dogshitLibertariansecessionist alternateTexas that he's created for hisfor his characters.
Okay, I need to make a decision. This is a review of Terminal One or is this talking about something stupid Eric July said. It's a review of Terminal One.
So Igave Terminal One a thumbs upbutit has problems that are baked into it, even though it's doing some witty things. It is not in a fun universe, so it ultimately becomesso what?Okay, so you have theseedgy heroes and there's probably a twist. I think the twist is going to be the teamyou think is the good guys is actually the bad guys.
I think the team you think is the bad guys is actually the good guys. There's a very good head fake. Go check this out.
It's a good book. But ultimately it became a who cares andpart of the reason that people care is because not just that it's a good superherobook. When I started Jawbreakers, it was like everything's woke and I'm gonna make a comic that isn't woke andthe thing is there's very few woke comics.
So how does Jawbreakers stick out? It's a superhero. It's good. Can't really sell it like that.
The appeal ofSpider-Man it's not just that he's Spider-Man. It's that he's in the Marvel Universe and even though they kind ofparcel that off sometimesyou know the Tobey Maguire was basicallySpider-Man was kind of the only superhero around and now they kind of they connect them inkind of weird ways. Like is the Punisher in Spider-Man the same Punisherfrom the movie where he was just slaughtering everybody?Maybe, probably not.
Different dimensions, whatever. Supposedly they're all in the same timeline, but they're very different characters. But it's fun.
It's not just about one character and a couple of thesupporting cast. It's about these wonderfuluniverses that are very rich and we've been going to throughout our lives. So when you start a superhero thing it becomes okay, sowhat's the best it could be?And you could say oh probably the best is something like Invincible which is very popular for decades and now has a popular cartoon.
And the thing is thatthat doesn't exist in a vacuum. That I mean Invincible is basicallySuperman with Peter Parker's personality.Almost every character is some sort of analog to something from Marvel and DC and it can't succeed withoutMarvel and DC.
You need aYou need all those referencesto enjoy it.Now of course there may be exceptions, but generally that's how I look at it. SoJeff Johns and was it Joe Casey?Jeff?Got that completely wrong.
Robert Kirkman. I was thinking about Robert Kirkman, but I said Jeff Johns. Robert Kirkman and Joe Casey.
Andy KubertDave McCaig and a million people doing variant covers. So it's umI'm not gonna say it's okay. I'm not gonna say it's alright.
I'm not gonna say all those sad old man.I'm going to say it's an interesting premise that ultimatelyInstead of saying what if it has you saying so what?See what I did there with the what's it's like a thing. But anyway, so we get introduced to this guy that you think might be the main character.
He's got aYou know, you find out about his powers. It's a weird eyeball thing. You see hiscostume and then he gets killed.
Very early in it. And you're like, oh, okay you did the bit where you make us think this is the main guyAnd then you fake it out and it's actually somebody else. So then we cut to her and you think oh, she's the main character.
SpoilerShe isn't. This one legitimately got me.I thought she was gonna be the main character and then they kill her off and it's kind of an X-Men thingexcept for it's totally an X-Men thing andso whenever theyFind out about people who could have the potential to unlock powers the two teams chase after themLike I said, there's some head fakes.
There's someFun bits, but ultimately it's just a superhero. I don't think superheroes workWithout being in the Marvel Universethe DC Universe orconstantly referencing themI was entertained with this but it becomes a thing of how long am I going to stick around forSomebody's alternate take on superheroes in a universe that isn't fun andTo that my answer would be not very long. I will probably check out one more issueBut um, I just yeah, I think this is also what I call a vegetables comicVegetables is a term.
I came up with back during the cross gymsoKirkman since he's a mega quad zillionaireHe likes to say, you know, oh we started this comp comic five years ago and we're five years ahead andWe have a planned ending and we have all this and we have backgrounds in every panel. It's like I'm gonna fuckYou're not building a bridge I don't need to know that you have you know laminated rivets that won't you knowRustThis is alove thing you either fall in love with something and it's exciting orIt is it and I can see all the little parts of thisI can see the mysterious island and two teamsI think my favorite thing was this eyeball creature that they get their powers from and just readingreading his speechesYou now face maculoxEons of cosmic time bring the moment forward the choice is upon us once morelimitless potential or apocalyptic consequence a blessing or he and he just keeps on going but I was likeYou know what? If you were a cosmic eyeball, yeah, you would probably beYourself. I don't know.
I really really enjoyedThe eyeballs dialogue and there is a good amount of it. It just keeps on goingSo there were surprises when she gets tested for her powers and she ultimatelyFails you're like, oh shit. I didn't see that coming and then you're like, ohIs this one of those clever books where they're like I bet you thought this well, it's actually thisOkay, you did that twice how many more times can you do that without just justExpecting it to happenSo I have this argument with friends and I've seen people do tick tocks about thisIf I was a Trojan soldierDoing my patrols or whateverAnd I found a giant wooden horseAt the same place that the enemies had been I would sayThere's people inside thereBecause what else would it be? Why would you build a giant horse except for to hide people inside it?Now this is these are the days before bombs I think they had like what was that called st.
Elmo's fire and stuff like thatSo I would have said this is some kind ofPestilence like it's filled with you knowInfected chickens or something like that. I would sayBurn that but don't get close to itWe're gonna shootArrows that we're going to light on fireAnd then we're going to make sure we're not downwind and then we're just going to avoid this because this is a hundred percent a trapSo I and people are always like, oh, it's so easy to say that it's like I feel like most people would assumeIt was a trap. IKnow they do different things like oh, this is a peace offering.
This was an offering to the godsIt was an apology to Apollo or whateverIt just seems like there's room for people inside of that thingAnd I can just burn itWe can burn that thing from 200 yards away with the with the longbows. Yeah, just burn the motherfuckerThen we'll kind of sift through the ashes. Oh, no, there's yeahThere's about 20 guys in there a lot of poop to a lot of poopBy the way, if you think you're slick because you're gonna talk about the poop and the pee inside the Trojan horseThey literally have a line of dialogue about thatAnd they're not fancy.
I think they literally call it piss and shitBut yeah, soThis is a good comic. I had fun reading it, but IDon't I I don't want to followThis world it's not a fun world. I think I've made jawbreakers a pretty fun worldBut again, it completely requires you to knowMarvel and DC pretty well, and that's the enjoyOkay, and I'm the most popular person in the world as soon as I get thisWow, that's no Wow everybodyEverybody who's ever known me is texting me during this 10 minutes.
But um, yeah, I'm really good artagain, I ohI don't think I explained the vegetables the vegetables is like we we worked really hard and we did everything right. Don't you love us?no, ILove this shitty house freaking Rob LiefeldNew Mutants issue that he drew in like five days. IDon't know.
I can't explain it. I admire you people. You all did a good job.
You really wanted it to be excellentbut it justIsn't so I don't know what to say. I thinkI think the independence should be independent. Yeah, you can do stuff like Ninja Turtles is what you started as aParody ofWhat Ronin and Daredevil Frank Miller? But it very quickly became its own thing.
I don't consider that to be a superhero universe. I consider that to be aweird fantasyfurry universeUm, but likeNinja Turtles, that's a great example of someone being inspired by mainstream comics doing their own thingAnd then it becoming sort of its own mainstreambut umReverse sucks. It's not called.
It's not cool to call people beggars just because they want to play in a sandbox that everybody lovesmeanwhile your alternative isWhich with hat and detective with hat?Jesus he was explainingHe's got this pimp character who clearly looks like a pimp a blaxploitation character called salvageThere was this whole bit with Stan Lee co-created this character called ravage and he was supposed to be a hero andJohn Byrne was trying to explain to him like that's not that's not a heroUm, but he was like he's like, you know, the Ripper was got a lot of characters. Let me tell you aboutthis a private investigator they got a lot of those calledsalvage and then all he said he just showed a picture of Stevie Ray Vaughn wearing that hat someblues guitarists who kind of had like a zoot suit and then he showed a picture of Dick Tracy likeIs this a lookbook you didn't tell me anything about the character you didn't tell me how you came up with the characteryou didn't explain how yourlibertarian secessionist alternate version ofTexas is some sort ofInviting deep place. There was a period of time with Jawbreakers where I didn't know that worldand so I was kind of likeExploring it very slowly and now I know that world.
It's just basically the Marvel Universe with different namesSpecifically the Marvel Universe around 1990 and I'm fine with that. I'm very excited theKind of crazy job Rick's Jawbreakers contingency should go out soon. And for people saying like hey Zach, why is it not going out?I've covered this a million times.
I have a dozen different spreadsheets that IDid not breadcrumb properly so I'm having to go through them line by line andCross checking themso that the master list isAnd then I'm gonna have to likerandomly select lines and then email people andthen decide like okay, well, you know, Iemailed a hundred people out of the4,000 linesCan I say can I extrapolate what I think is what I'm gonna do is I'm going to fulfill these in batchesSo if I send out the same the first batch and a lot of people were like, oh you got my order wrongThen I just shit. I'll have to freaking start over I guessIt's a lot of work, but anyway Jawbreakers contingency took so long thatCannibal America is like one page away from being doneSo I have some interesting plans for both cannibal America which is one page away from being done andCostume maniac which is drawn and it's currently being colored. But anyway, go check out terminalHey, it's uh, actually I think this first issue was like seven bucks or something like thatIs it a recommend though should I rescind that thumbs up theI'mNo, I'm not reviewing the entire future of this seriesI'm just reviewing this issue and this issue was fun and interesting and surprised metwiceCan it do it in the second and third issueMaybe we'll see I'm definitely gonna check out the next issue.
Anyway, thanks for watching
