Why do current and former communist states tend to persecute a large portion of their population?

Because communism technically benefits the bottom of the barrel, which improves the initial takeover. But people are going to get pissed when they realize that their lives are shittier than what it was, which is why Stalin gives them a free "vacation" to a camp in Siberia to raise morale.

Plus, capitalism and corruption will set in if you don't maintain the status quo.

That's one of the major problems- initially, Communism favors the bottom of the barrel.

And generally speaking, the "bottom of the barrel" of society isn't there because of some cruel twist of fate or unforseeable circumstance that blindsided them. The "bottom of the barrel" is there many times because they're indolent, financially irresponsible, genuinely stupid, or more commonly- incapable of learning from their failures because they blame others for those failures rather than self-reflecting to improve their life and make better decisions.

I know this is not universal in regards to the "bottom of the barrel". Even I know there are exceptions- some people just have bad shit happen and they end up at rock bottom- but the difference is, the people who are this special exception might end up at the bottom of the barrel, but they're almost always the ones that climb their way back up. They don't tend to stay there.

I have never in my life met a socialist or communist that is productive, skilled, mature, ambitious, or intelligent.

In fact, the only one I see fairly regularly- he's in his late 30's, works in a pizza parlor, has never held a management position or anything other than an entry-level position in any job, spends hundreds of dollars on Warhammer models and video games every month, doesn't have a reliable vehicle, struggles to feed two children, always dresses like a slob and has poor grooming, and always blames his shit-awful financial circumstances on everything but his horrible decision-making. He outright scoffs at the idea of pursuing a better job, because the pizza joint 'is a bunch of good people to work with'....

...And he seems to think that if we suddenly became a real Socialist/Communist country- that his value as a person would suddenly skyrocket and he'd get all the things he believes he's entitled to. This is an individual whose employment and personal life choices are what I expect from a mental invalid that requires caregivers.

And Communism appeals to that kind of person by design. It is custom-built so that dumb useless slobs will follow a slightly less dumb useless slob into destabilizing everything, all because of the promise of getting everything they think they deserve. That's why millions starved to death in the Soviet Union- because the revolutionaries were overwhelmingly nothing more than a bunch of stupid, illiterate, unskilled useless eaters... and once they killed all the farmers, mill and factory workers, and everyone that basically had the knowledge and means to produce essential goods- it became painfully obvious that Ivan didn't know how to do any of that shit, and the people who did were in a mass grave.

The only good thing Communism does is kill a shitload of Communists after a considerable length of time filled with absolute fucking misery- which is what every communist deserves.

Communism was Karl Marx' get rich quick scheme for world domination - a way he could reach greatness without having to work for it. He liked Napoleon and was hoping to be a Napoleon. Hint: The French Revolution played out the same way as Russian Revolution. It's like Charles Manson with his ideas of a race war where he'd spark a race war between whites and blacks. He and his "Family" would side with the blacks, and since blacks are stupid, they would be the rulers of a post-white world as the the physically superior negro walks out victorious, yet unable to rule himself due to his lower intellect and thus make Charlie Manson king of the U.S and make them pick cotton. Replace bourgeois and proletariat with Niggers, Jews, Whites, Arabs and you have Mein Kampf which despite written for Germans is loved by Blacks, Arabs, Slavs and etc because it's perfect for anyone who is a loser like Hitler (he made money drawing art for POSTCARDS) was before rose to power. Despite hating Communism and hating the French Revolution it played out exactly the same way as both. All those who wanted it to be good and helpful were killed and all was left was a guy like Stalin.

This also happened after Mao Zeodong took the reins, just replace the inept pizza jockey with thousands of impressionable highschoolers and farmers. Just throw in unrealistic production goals and forcing every tenth peasant to become a blacksmith to get one of the worst famines in history...And then the Chinese realized that being a philosopher doesn't automatically make you an great bureaucrat.

Capitalism can function with monarchies, dictatorships and colonialism and so gets some of the stink from these ideas.
