You only have to watch Pumping Iron to know the reason IMO. Arnold teases another bodybuilder in the movie for being a beta bitch who got into it to soothe his ego and get asspats for having a good body, whereas he feels that bodybuilding should be done just for your own interest and challenge.

People who get into extremes of dieting and fitness are either athletes (like Arnold, or Rich Piana, who wanted to exceed their body's limits for the thrill of it), or they're people who are incredibly insecure who are desperate to reach the unattainable goal they need to feel better about themselves. They might seem superficially to be similar goals, but one mindset is enthused about breaking their barriers and one only gets more manic and obsessed.
 
So if you mix your comeuppance with fanta, you become Chris Chan, if you mix it with ayahuasca you become this guy. I honestly cannot tell which reality is worse.

And bodybuilding specifically tends to revolve around two long-term destructive behaviors: heavy drug use and strict dieting. Connor appears to have embraced both with religious devotion.

What's funny about the situation is that he seems to have absolutely no ability to comprehend the concept of moderation. South American tribes have been using ayahuasca for a millennium, but they weren't completely bombed on it every single day. I think that the realization that psychoactives are nothing like anabolic steroids is going to come far too late for this guy, and I also eagerly look forward to the acceleration of his already far in progress mental break.

Not all psychedelics are LSD and even within LSD there are variables but it seems like this guy was ingesting powerful psychedelics like they were candy and that is never a recipe for success.

Looking through the OP(which was fucking excellent) and subsequent posts I cannot help but notice the guy always has crazy eyes. He has that look like something is just a bit off in the ol' dome and when you start dumping whatever chemicals make you feel okay for a minute into the mix...well...you see the fruits.
 
I must say just watching the first 30 secs of each the videos in the OP in sequence had me choking with laughter. As others have said, Ayahuasca isn’t the main reason he went bonkers - it was just the jet fuel for his underlying mental illness. He’s either severely bipolar or schizophrenic and the Ayahuasca turbo charged it. Psychedelics and underlying mental illness are no bueno, muy muy mal. Heroin would have been a better choice for him than fucking Ayahuasca given his brain chemistry.
