So there is no announcement for masterrace RDR2 which means the only option is to play it on a console or wait 6 years until I hit puberty. Because its not coming out until October that leaves plenty of time to decide on a console purchase and because I couldn't find a thread in this subforum dedicated to console slapfights I made this one.

The TLDR question is: Taking into account user experience, menus, controllers, games, marketplace, graphics/hardware, sound which console do you think is better?

I'm not really particular to playing online on either of them but I don't really know about the differences between them and its almost impossible to get objective opinions about consoles without reading the opinions of people who aren't exceptional. Given Kiwifarms is dedicated to slapfights and exceptional people I'm assuming that people's opinions on consoles of all things will probably be fairly reasonable (:optimistic:)

I intend to use the console through my PC screen, so I would be using it up close and personal and not in a couch-gamer scenario.

A big plus would be if the console actually supported ultrawide or I'm assuming none of them do and it'll just run in 1080p.

(Nintendo Switch isn't an option because I already have one which is doing just fine sitting in my cupboard)

The PS4 looks better on smaller monitor screens IMO (24-27"). The xbox controller is way better for long sessions and easily doubles as a pc controller as well.
PS4 has always had this blue tint to it's graphics for some reason, that might just be me. This doesn't negate from the graphic quality at all. It's only noticeable when playing the same game on both consoles.

The xbox does tend to get hotter, so if it's in a compact space by your pc, you might get some roaring fans, especially with a game later in the consoles lifespan. RDR is going to be pushing the engine and consoles to new limits.

Thanks that's some good information.

I guess its worth mentioning that the only console controller I've particularly liked was the original xbox duke controller. I heard that it was going to be rereleased though so that would be interesting.

In the point of view of a complete ignorant on the system wars, unless you are looking for that sweet Sony exclusives(Yakuza, God of War, Naughty Dog), Xbox One X is the way to go.
-Controller good for PC
-4K Quality
-Backwards Compatibility
-Some games has crossplay with Switch and PC (Rocket League)
-Game Pass

I think it's around $70-80 and is wired. So, im not too sold on that. I do know there are great 3rd party PS4 controllers that are just set up like xbox one controllers and some of those are more ergonomic with extra buttons for shit.

-Backwards Compatibility

-Game Pass

These right here are pretty sweet too. Sea of Thieves is already on that Game Pass, which is way more worth it than paying full retail, and they just added KOTOR and some other classic xbox games on one.

If you're planning to buy the disc version, I'd go with PS4 because the installation times are much faster. If you buy digital, I'd recommend Xbox One.

The Xbox is also less expensive as long as you're not going for the fancy 4K version.

PS4 has slightly better exclusives and pstv is pretty sweet if you want cabletv lite version.

Xbone has a vastly superior controller for adult hands and just looks better imo.

Honestly if I were deciding right now it would come down to exclusives.

I would recommend looking at exclusives between the two consoles and choosing the one with the most exclusive games you would definitely want to play.

I myself have a "5-game rule", where I never purchase a console unless it has least 5-games I am 100% certain I would spend many hours on. In my opinion getting a console for only 1-2 games is a complete waste of money.

Also make sure the games are actually coming out/already out, there were some people who bought Xbox One just for Scalebound only for it to get cancelled. While RDR2 is far enough in development to almost certainly get released, in some cases people blew their money on a console immediately after the game being announced.

I myself have a PS4(and like you, a Switch). I liked the exclusives it offered more than the Xbox One, not much else. IMO PS4 and Xbox One are too similar both in function and library for it to be worth owning both

If you're remotely interested in any kind of social experience via a gaming console, buy whatever your friends have. Which in all likelihood will mean a PS4. The PS3/XBox 360 generation ended pretty much in a dead heat, but this generation the PS4 has absolutely dusted the XBone in ownership terms.

If the above isn't issue, I'd say go with whichever you can get more cheaply. The specs are close enough. Which very well might mean an Xbox. Check out sites like Craigslist. I remember seeing a LOT of ads for used X Box Ones at relatively low prices that were literally captioned "Friends all have PS4s and I'm looking to change." Usually with a decent game library as a toss in. Never once saw an ad going the other way.

Craigslist is how I came to own an Xbox One, at any rate. Bought mine for something like $110 off of Craigslist. I don't think it was stolen, but I do kinda think the previous owner had some kind of substance abuse issue. Which I guess I kind of fed with my purchase, now that I think about it. :|

PS4 has decent exclusives (Yakuza, Uncharted, Persona 5) and the Xbox One has a better controller and backwards compatibility with both the 360 and original Xbox. It really depends on what you like more

PC master race here, but I've got an xbox, because Madden. Apparently if you move it while it is playing it will scratch the fuck out of the dvd. I'm sure you console players know this, but meh my local movie shop buffed it out for five bucks and this is my story.

So my advice is take your scratched movie, music, game dvd/cd and have it buffed.

The only reason I buy a console is because of Madden. The last PC madden I remember was 2006.

Xbox One's are cheap at a pawn shop or on eBay. I still use my launch era model a ton. They're also more durable than a PS4 (the older PS4 models have overheating issues and need to be cleaned out, along with PSU issues), XBL goes down less, and the backwards compatibility feature is quite good, far better than the laughable Xbox 360's original BC. Games actually run quite well on it, and some games even run better on the Xbox One. The controllers are also more durable and you can get third party ones for dirt cheap if you ever have friends over.

The PS4 on the other hand has PSN outages, flimsy controllers with no main third party alternatives, they cost more used, and the older models run on the hot side (and attract dust bunnies). The main thing the PS4 has going for it IMO is the fact that it has a lot more Asian games, even as some get Steam/PC ports, and even though some are Vita ports. Digimon Story Cyber Sleuth, Persona 5, Super Robot Taisen, Yakuza, Battle Garegga Rev.2016, and Nier Automata are only on the PS4 and maybe Vita or PS3. Furthermore, a lot of Japanese games this gen have Asian English subbed versions.

You can use the PS4 controllers on PC, you just have to install some stuff or use the official wireless dongle. However, I agree with @Dunsparce that you should choose your console based on the exclusives you want, and the Xbox One's current slate is really lacking at the moment.

Whatever you choose, just make sure you do a one-hour-long prestream and enable captions so we can make a word bubble infographic and count how many times you say the words "OK" or "Taxes".

If you're getting the basic model, ps4. If you're getting the 'pro/x' iteration, Xbox. Unless you wanna dive down the vr rabbit hole. There's apparently ways to make a psvr play nice with your pc, too

I own an Xbox One. It's a good console, but it has no fucking games. PS4 has all the games.

If you like games, get the PS4. I only bought my Xbone because I have a shit ton of 360 titles, and a lot of free digital Xbone games too from being a Gold member. Otherwise I would have bought a PS4 without thinking twice.

There are many different answers to your question and it all depends on what you have currently when it comes to games and what your TV/monitor is capable of.

Do you have a 4K TV or a monitor capable of over 1080p? If so you may want to consider and PS4 Pro or XBox One X.

Any Xbox One model will have backwards compatibility with around 500 out of 2000 or so Xbox 360 titles and small smattering of Xbox titles. If you own the original discs for these titles you dont have to pay anything to play these. You can get used Xbox 360 titles at any video game store and Xbox titles at any retro store. You can get them even cheaper at garage sales and flea markets. Owning an Xbox One X will give graphical enhancement options to all these titles.

Conversely the PS4 has no innate backwards compatibility and if you want to play PS3 titles youre our of luck. You can get PS2 and PS1 titles to play on it but you have to buy them from the online store and they will not let you use the original discs. There are better ways to play these titles if you dont mind pirating though. I can dish some info on that if youre interested.

Do you care about exclusives? PS4 has better exclusives. All X Box One X exclusives are playable on Windows 10 PCs through the Windows 10 store.

Not factoring price? If you just care RDR2 then odds are its going to look the best on the XBox One X considering its being made by a western studio. I might honestly wait 3 weeks before it comes out and look at at Digital Foundry's analysis of each version. The differences between PS4 Pro and Xbox One X will differ depending on how much the developer takes advantage of each specific hardware. MHW for example doesnt have too much difference between the PS4 Pro and Xbox One X and neither does FF15. RDR2 is going to be a big title so i can guarantee they will do a video on it.

Who has better online? I dunno but hear Xbox Live is better even though you gotta pay for it. PS4 will have higher player base though since PS4 is literally outselling Xbox One 2 to 1. Like fighting games? PS4 is where everyone plays those.

If it were me though. Id get a PS4 Pro, a beefy PC for Xbox One exclusives, and a cheap Xbox 360 at a garage sale. Those will cover all your basis.

TL;DR: Get a PS4

dont buy an xbox. standard xbone will run the game sub 1080p and 25 fps avg and X is just too fucking expensive for 1 game.
if you really gotta buy a console, buy a standard ps4. You get decent performance and a unch of decent/average games you cant play anywhere else.

I have both and the Xbox One is better for darker games because it gives them more "color". The PS4 is better for games that a lot of the game you're in an outside environment. I would probably go with a PS4.
