Couple ends life after man who borrowed 11 lakh dies

A couple in Vellore city ended their lives on Sunday after a man, who received a 11 lakh loan on interest in several instalments from them, died due to health complications two months ago at Velachery in Chennai. The man's wife and sons refused to return the cash, claiming they were not aware that he had received a loan from them.

Vellore (south) police inspector K Kandeepan said the couple, identified as K Murugesan, 62, a mason, and M Mala alias Vaijantimala, 60, lent money on interest in several instalments to Kannan, a priest at a temple in Velachery, Chennai.

Kannan wanted to remodel his house as per the requirements of his two sons.

Kannan died two months ago due to health complications. The couple, after learning that the debtor had died, decided not to disturb the family during the bereavement.

They approached the priest's family after two months and requested them to repay the money with interest. However the familysaid they were not aware of any loans received by him and told them to approach the person who borrowed from them.

Deeply hurt, the couple returned to Vellore and decided to end their lives. They left a suicide note explaining the reason for taking the extreme step. They died by suicide by hanging in their room in the house.

The couple's elder daughter, who lives in a portion of their house, reached their room on Sunday morning and was shocked to find them hanging from the ceiling. She immediately alerted the police. A police team reached the spot, recovered the bodies, and sent them for postmortem examination. The team recovered the suicide note and began inquiries.

Wtf is a Lakh?

Apparently, Indian base-10 numbering follows a "2,2,3" (I'm not making this shit up) decimal separator system. Instead of writing one million as 1,000,000 like every other country in the world, they write it like 10,00,000.

Just look at this shit and tell me you don't feel tempted to run in front of a train at high speed.

Ah. Super power by 20030 makes more sense.

Maybe we're over thinking this.

The debtors family told them to approach the borrower, who was dead, so they died to reach him and demand their money.

Pajeet logic.
Damn, and people complain when the collection agencies won't leave them alone. These assholes will kill themselves to get their money from you in the afterlife

The collection agencies must never know, or they'll quickly be flooded with pajeet debt collectors pulling this shit

I want to know who the borrow was in relation to them. There’s very few people I would lend 14k to here, that’s like a million dollars to jeets over there.
Could be he leveraged his status as a priest. That carries a weight in caste-based societies that can be hard for those of us outside them to understand.

Do they not have banks over there in pajeetland? Why wouldn't you have some kind of notarized document saying that someone owed you money, if you lent it out? Nothing here makes any sense.
I think they wanted to avoid paying taxes. I'm not a lawyer, but making money on interest probably counts as income and is therefore probably taxed.

Kinda fucked up if they were allowed to get away with scamming that old couple like that. They took their own lives but this feels akin to murder. Not like the old people were going to be able to fight them over it.

Japan can also get weird with commas because of linguistics.
Yeah, there's a specific word for 10,000. So for example 1,000,000 is spoken as 百万 (one hundred ten thousands.) Then there's a specific word for 100,000,000. There are probably more after that but how often do you talk about numbers past the 15th power?
I've personally never seen any weird comma placements with Japanese numbers but I could believe it. Unless you mean forgoing commas entirely because yeah, that's common.
