Los Angeles, Feb 2 (PTI) Japanese film production and distribution company Shochiku is developing a remake of 1997 fantasy-thriller 'Cube'.

Directed by Vincenzo Natali, the Canadian production revolved around six people who find themselves trapped in a maze-like cube and have to figure a way out, while evading fatal traps.

The original film became a cult hit in Japan following its September 1998 local release.

According to Variety, the remake will feature Japanese actors Suda Masaki, Okada Masaki, Tashiro Hikaru, Saito Takumi, Yoshida Kotaro and Anne as the six lead characters.

Shimizu Yasuhiko, whose credits include the 2019 movie “Vice', has directed the new film, with Natali on board as creative advisor.

Tokuo Koji has adapted the screenplay.

“No one can resist the powerful system of the 'Cube'. In making this film, it was as though we entered the Cube itself. (That was because we shot the entire film in one place.) We then had to confront ourselves. What lurks in the abyss of the self – hope or despair? You will soon be in the Cube with us. In fact, you may already be in it,' Shimizu said in a statement.

The film was shot in October and November of last year. It will open in Japan on October 22, 2021, with Shochiku distributing. PTI SHD SHD

I feel like Cube would be listed as an influence for many Japanese manga and anime. There's quite a few with the deadly trap, death room theme. A good example would be Reset Game. They were even working on making a live-action adaptation of the manga.

Hopefully Japan Cube gets a worldwide release.

Cool. I love Cube and the premise is something Japan will probably do a good job of adapting, hopefully it isn't super action focused and instead keeps to what made the original so fun.

My favorite scene from the first movie is when the Cop calls that lady a libtard and a dead egger. It was like Stefan Molyneux took over his body.

I like the three movies, each for their own reasons. Should be interesting.

I wonder if the Japanese version will add some nuance like one of the characters chews the other out for not having a job/being a NEET, or express the unhappiness of city life working too much and not seeing their kids or something.

I’m a huge fan of J- and K-horror and I tend to lean more towards those than English language horror movies. So I would definitely want to see this over the original.

Holy shit, a horror movie remake I'm actually excited to watch.

Watched the OG Cube for the first time about 2-3 years ago, and it ended up exceeding my expectations quite a lot. I enjoyed it. I'll echo the sentiment that a movie of this premise with a Japanese horror flavor to it sounds delightful.

cube 1 was a great film.
cube 2 faltered in the story but the hypercube itself was pretty rad.
cube 3 was forgettable.

my reservation with asian horror is that the genre kinda meanders about until the climax.

Same. Watched the OG for the first time around the same time you did, and found it to be a unique, thought-provoking, actually kinda funny at points thriller. +1 for the sentiment that the Japanese tackling this premise sounds all sorts of awesome, and consider me cautiously optimistic for this one.
