Decided to look up the lore of Cyberpunk before playing and gotta say i actually enjoy it. Learning that NY was nuked and that Silverhand nuked night city is pretty brutal. I do like the concept of "Soulkiller" and the irony that Alt was the first victim to become an engram. The little references that ive noticed do add a little more to the experience.
Cyberpunk universe is one of my favorite aspects of the franchise so far. It’s what’s happening in the background that immerses me into the game and brings me back into it for another playthrough.
Even while I kill Voodoos or scavs I often think about what’s going on beyond Night City. Like how Tokyo is like or the Plex in the east coast former USA.
The alternate history aspect puts things into perspective on how much society has changed in that timeline vs our own but also how similar things are in general. One aspect of cyberpunk that I like is how unafraid it is to criticize social ills. Many games wouldn’t touch degeneracy with a ten foot pole but cyberpunk dives into it and focuses on the sinister and ugly aspects of human nature.
Another element I like is how the game doesn’t criticize technology itself but it’s misapplication of technology onto society, how tools are used to harm others rather than benefit most of humanity. Granted the universe is very advanced and humans have colonized Moon and Mars and space but only a few can enjoy such luxuries and barely. Cyberpunk focuses on the common folk, the 90% who live on the streets and how the streets use these tech pieces to at least put up a fighting chance against the systems that tyrannizes all.
It’s somewhat hopeful? Perhaps. But Cyberpunk 2077 unintentionally describes anarcho-tyranny in its purest form. The game doesn’t just demonize corporations, but also the dregs of society (the gangs notably) and how they physically abuse and maim their victims. The game also allows you to criticize Johnny’s nihilistic and self sabotaging anarchic ideology and how he thinks nothing matters.
Another element the cyberpunk universe shows is the death of humanity. Religion is dead save for two run down churches in the city and one of them is used by a terrible and evil gang of Haitians who wants AIs to genocide humanity. Remnants of culture, community, are mostly extinguished and left to decay. There are no morals, no limits.
Part of me hypothesizes that the reason why cyberpunk is so ahead of our timeline technologically is due to this kind of blasé attitude to human life & endless warfare. Wars create chaos and misery but also speeds up tech innovation. There’s zero boundaries in cyberpunk. All’s fair game and the game warns the player about this. It asks you, do you want to live in an eye candy metropolis that could kill you in weeks or do you want to avoid this future? Personally I’d like cyberpunk cities to exist without all of the trash and misery but I digress.
