It's too bad many of the war criminals were let off or rehabilitated due to the rapid onset of the Cold War realignment. The zaibatsu should have been dismantled and the emperor hanged.

Agree re the zaibatsu, disagree re the emperor. Leaving him as a figurehead and supporter of the Occupation was the best thing the Allies could have done. The pic of the emperor meeting with General MacArthur was epic, showed the Japanese people working with the Allies was the way to go. Otherwise, you could well have seen a lot of resistance to the Occupation from people trying to avenge their Emperor.

We could and should have demanded a pound of flesh from EVERY Japanese company, of any size, that ever used Allied prisoners of war as slave laborers. Someone goes to prison, someone is executed, some companies are sold off and the proceeds go to POWs and/or their survivors.
