[Still Exceptional]

Decided to recently retry watching The Batman and honestly, I liked it. Sure they made the Joker look weird, but he actually did act a lot like any other version of the Joker.

My favorite part of this show was the take on Hugo Strange. The "Doctor at Arkham who becomes obsessed with criminality to the point of becoming a criminal" thing was kinda neat, more interesting than the usual "He's an evil psychologist who does evil things because reasons."
I also dug the look and the slow, pensive voice.


He was also the villain who came the closest to utterly fucking up Batman in the episode where he tells Batman that he unleashed a zombie virus on Gotham, then exposed him to the "antidote" which was actually a powerful hallucinogen that operated on suggestion. Strange told Batman and Robin he'd unleashes a zombie virus, so that's what they hallucinated. Insidious shit, he nearly got Batman to expose the rest of Gotham to the same shit.

Hugo Strange has always been one of the most unsettling villains. In large part because he is a villain that has state backing, most of the stories. Psychotic clowns, maniac riddle fanatics, short mobsters who mainly just want money - these are things that children fear. The State and all its power - that's what scares adults. The others will shoot you or tie you to a bomb or something. Hugo Strange makes a phone call and you're in a mental asylum with guards who think you're a dangerous maniac who needs to be pumped full of drugs.

 

[The Nothingness]

While The Batman was still in BTAS' shadow, there were moments that made it stand out and pretty kino, especially in the early season. You had a Joker would could get physical with Batman (Kevin Michael Richardson was an underrated Joker IMO), Adam West (60s Batman) as the mayor, Frank Gorshin (60s Riddler) as Hugo Strange in his early appearances, Robert Englund as the Riddler, two pretty good supporting characters (Detectives Yin and Bennett) before Batgirl and Robin show up, and a Harley Quinn that is not in a toxic relationship with Joker and is not as insufferable as she would later become in later shows.

A thing about The Batman's Harley that's interesting is it helped that Hynden Walch honestly does a really good voice for the character that is honestly superior to any of Tara Strong's Harley performances, which feel like a voice she'd do for something like Fairly Odd Parents than for Harley Quinn.

It has been confirmed that James Gunn is already trying to take creative control of Joker 2. He decries cameo porn in superhero movies and comes across him projecting because even Twitter pointed out he is making the same mistake as Zack Synder did with Batman V Superman. The DCU reboot has three superhero teams in a movie setting up a new Superman. Not to mention a new supergirl and possibly a live action superdog.

This is pretty much the same with other movies, such as 1978 Superman. There wasn't really a need for a sequel, but its Donner cut of II was more ambitious compared to the original theatrical cut.

I'm going to laugh my ass off if the best Snyderverse film is this second Aquaman and it's more or less canceled by Gunn to make way for his Guardians DCU edition thing.

On one hand, I'm not terribly excited about Joker 2 as its predecessor ended nicely, and I'm still questioning the decision of turning it into a musical (I mean on paper, it can work, but I'm not holding my breath). Slither, Super and his writing in the Scooby-Doo live-action movies were the only good things Gunn has made. The first Guardians was good but in a B grade like. I do not care about the second and I never want to see the third movie. Just capeshit in general just makes me sick to my stomach.

The first few Aquaman 2 reviews a few hours were generally positive, but now it's at 34 RT. Jahns said is was trash too. I get some real 'paid off' vibes with a lot of the positive reviews. Hopefully it'll do worse than The Marvels.

At this point, wanting Aquaman 2 to do much worse than The Marvels is being a bit too generous. The idea of having big budget capeshit being successful means nothing because it's the same redundant shit for the past 15 years. How weird that when two movies (one based off a famous video game property and another based on famous toy property) ended up becoming beating capeshit at the box office worldwide altogether, that's when you know that even normies are sick of capeshit

Doesn't help the only capeshit that did well is Spiderverse and Guardians 3. But that's because both of those kept the good will with their fans and were different from the rest of the common capeshit.

The cameo porn critique is funny given Gunn was likely forced to hype up the Flash which was full of that crap.

Though god I hope he doesn't get too involved in the Non-DCU projects

I just got back from seeing Aquaman 2 and I frankly don't get what's so bad about it. If I'm in the minority thinking it's good that's okay with me.
