Defunding the Police - What’s the end goal here?

I’ve been seeing nothing but people sperging out about defunding the police. Just wanted to make this thread to see what is the end goal here. What’s the one thing they’re trying to do and what’s the reality of it.

I'm not certain that there's an end goal in general, rather this seems like an idea came up as a kneejerk reaction.

Think about it, if the local governments do go through with cutting police budgets, where will those cuts affect the most? Unless the precincts have to start laying off officers to deal with those cuts (already risky given how stretched thin some cities are), it's going to be the wages that will get chopped down further. Cops are already arguably underpaid for such a high risk job (be it a serious injury, mental trauma, or death), try telling those poor bastards that they're going to now practically work for peanuts.

Expect mass walk outs if such a thing does happen, which will make the current crime rates even worse in the long term.

Others, more dangerously, are actual idealists who actually believe in the utopian ideals of getting rid of police by uplifting people's condition through social engineering. I've heard some more moderate takes where the argument is that the police are stretched too thin in their duties and should be a little more focused. The most common example I've been given is when you need to talk down an insane person who is having an episode, be they armed or not, the police are not adequately trained to calm the situation compared to an actual mental health expert who can try to better talk them down. You can even arm said expert with a gun if the situation calls for it and train them in disarming so they aren't completely helpless to some random hobo with a knife, just the ideal situation is to be able to talk them down. Simply put, the defunding is more like budget redistribution and refocusing.

That's naive even for a moderate position. Cops are trained to talk people down and there are many successful cases of them doing exactly that already. Not to mention you would basically be recruiting cops, but just more focused on mental health issues like mental cops i guess.

This in and off itself is kind of pointless since cops respond based on whose closer to the crime being called in and its a crap shoot if mental cops would be anywhere near the call and even more likely the dispatcher will have no clue what the hell is actually going on to identify which kind of cop should be dispatched to that location.

Finally, mental health professionals work in controlled environments and absolutely collapse in usefulness in uncontrolled ones. That's just how the mental health industry works, its the cops job to bring them in and the professionals job to fix them the best they can.

If we remove cops, we can finally enact mob rule and if someone kills members of the mob in self defense we can post more shit on social media about them until more bodies/cannon fodder are rallied and thrown at them until they succumb and we get to sadistically overpower and kill them.

That way we get to have a new bad guy every day, it will be great.

The most fair systems of all for these people are ones you can just pay your way out of if you have the right connections, they can't ever assume they'll be on the losing end.

For me I think there needs to be wide scale reform rather than a mass defunding. I do think it’s fucking silly police have hand me down military gear that has no use beyond giving them a toy to show off. Even in the current riots, school shootings, etc I have never seen most of the hardware given to them used beyond guard duty. And that’s normallly after the situation has passed.

I do think some of their immunities should be stripped. And not because racism or anything but because honestly if a cop doesn’t like you and wants to kill you, he can get away with it, White or Black.
Get rid of no knock warrents. Cops either end up targeting the wrong house, getting bad information or it’s not worth all the resources in the end. At best you stopped one guy who will be replaced pretty quick from dealing small amounts of drugs. At worst you kicked in the wrong door and either traumatized, seriously injured or even killed a family for no reason

Cities are just too big and dealing with people no matter your job is fucking infuriating when there's millions of them being the same kind of stupid.
Defunding the police who are used to their budget to the point where removing a cent destabilizes them is dumb, they need reformation and a readjustment of priorities before tackling that.

It's hard to think about what it would be like without them, especially in large urban areas. Individual cops more disconnected and detached, maybe?
Unions collect a lot of money and get employees invested quite heavily, that sort of thing keeps people interested because it may pay off when you do something incredibly stupid.

Internal investigations exist for this reason already though. Its not even the fault of police forces if internal is not doing their job.

I'm not generally against unions since the worst it usually gets is you wind up with incompetent dipshits who stay on too long. The worst that comes out of construction unions for instance is the office politics and maybe some disability fraud.

Cops are another story; they already have legal authority to kill people if they feel it's justified (just don't do it in public otherwise you might get fired maybe) but otherwise the union exists to keep them safe from repercussions.

An example; here's been more than a few stories of women being stalked and harassed by cops (namely ex-spouses) after rejecting/divorcing them, and approximately jack and shit being done about the obvious conflict of interest, because the union will side with the cop to protect him from legal combat even with overwhelming evidence showing his behavior. In some places you have to find a cop the next town over to help, assuming that he's high ranking or can even do something for events happening outside of his jurisdiction, if you are having problems with local police.

Internal investigations exist for this reason already though. Its not even the fault of police forces if internal is not doing their job.

"Internal Investigations" just means "we investigated ourselves". They might as well just be called the HR department; they only have the best interests of the police as a public entity in mind, not individual players or civilian interests. If those interests involve firing or condemning one bad cop to keep allegations towards others from surfacing, they can and will do that instead, because one big scandal is better than a thousand smaller ones.

I have heard multiple ideas about what the end goal could be. "They" refers to different people in each example.

1. Anarchy. They believe the power vacuum will be filled by good natured community organized policing.
2. Anchoring bias. They set up a ridiculous notion, threaten to actually do it, then after the backlash introduce a bill that looks reasonable in comparison and so gets massive support. They, of course, slip heinous things into this bill.
3. The police aren't their political pawns. They want to remove the police and replace them with an institution that operate as their political pawns.
4. They know the mob favors their goals and so are in favor of mob rule.
5. They are law-breakers and frustrated that the police get in the way of them doing whatever they want, be that vandalism, theft, selling drugs, etc.
