The serpentine haunting served a purpose, to bring peace and power back to Barbara and Adam. The only reason why the Maitlands and Lydia were so disgusted with him is how he did, not what he was trying to do. If the means were better, they would have been lauding him.

Betelgeuse may have been a ghost of his time, a ghost of sexual perversion, a bio-exorcist, and a menace, but from an objective standpoint, one could say that he was the ghost with the most.
