In 1958, Martin Luther King Jr penned a book named "Stride Toward Freedom: The Montgomery Story" in which he claimed six principles of non-violence inspired by the teachings of Gandhi to guide oppressed individuals of any race, religion, sex, and origin.

The sixth and final principle he presented was that of "the universe (being) on the side of justice" to which King writes “The believer in nonviolence has deep faith in the future. He knows that in his struggle for justice he has cosmic companionship. There is a creative force in this universe that works to bring the disconnected aspects of reality into a harmonious whole.”

Was King correct or does the universe not give a shit about justice?

If the universe was conscious somehow, I doubt it would care about an infinitesimal rock or the slightly intelligent apes that cover it with prettier rocks.

Nature, itself, is predicated on destruction and consumption of energy and life to sustain and produce more of it. The weak prey on the weaker, the strong sometimes enforce justice, you can configure those sentences any way you want and they'll be just as true as the next one.

If the universe did tend towards justice, why would we have to enforce it ourselves? And if it only leaned towards it to help towards that goal, what about moral relativism, or differing morals I'm general? What about the tragic things that could not be prevented? Why would evil exist in the first place if the universe was anathema to it?

That's entirely up to perception. In general I agree with circular square.

In a less abstract sense like Luther is talking about though, I think that's a helpful perspective to take even if not literally.
All kinds of belief systems and hell, even shit like Alcoholics Anonymous, stress the idea of turning control over to some perceived greater power regardless of what that power might be. It's just a mechanism by which to stress connection and attentiveness to nature/the universe instead of to one's ego or to other people.

Does that mean the universe is on the side of "justice"? Not really, but by seeing the universe/nature as a caring entity that will help you if you cooperate with it instead of something to be denied or subjugated it'll help people to operate better, even if it seems like that type of attitude tends to come at the cost of a person's connection to other people.
