Does anyone know how to hack a store radio?

We used to have a guy who hacked the receiver (a Kalipso, I think) with his Spotify playlist. He showed me the gadget he bought, but it was a while ago. It might have been a raspberry pi, or something of similar size.

It'd be nice to play other music when it's slow, or there are no customers around.

Not something I recommend doing as it's something that might cost you your job depending on what kind of boss you have. There's a reason shops play shitty playlists, it's because they have paid to be able to play those songs in specific. You don't want your boss to have some copyright shit filed against him, as unlikely as it is.

Could always look into smaller wireless earbuds. I had one that looked just like a hearing aid and people never questioned it.

Fuck speakers, just bring in one of these bad boys and assert dominance.

I wear a beanie at work, over my ears and keep two air buds up in the fabric of the beanie next to my ears. As long as the buds are pointing in your ears, you should be able to hear the music just fine.

Yeah, most are Cloud-based nowadays. It's hosted on their Intranet (not the internet) that's only shared with the managers. But if you're REALLY committed, you could rig the store mic (assuming there is one) to broadcast your music, overriding the default music.
