This isn't lolcow work, but rather a giant big article I wish many lolcows would read. I wish Chris would take heed. I wish every Sonic recolourer would read this. I wish all people who have giant big dreams about getting rich through fanfics would read this.
Don Rosa: Why I Quit
Don Rosa is an incredibly popular Disney comics writer and artist. However, he's never considered himself a professional artist. He drew Disney comics because he happened to love Carl Barks' work. And, of course, he got in touch with Disney publishers and got really, really good at this stuff and won Eisner awards and like. The rest is history.
Well, almost. And he retired because he was not going to win. Disney's policies for work-for-hire are not exactly made with artists in mind. Every fan of his work assumed Rosa is rich and famous when he's just famous and Disney is doing the "rich" part. And he didn't want to branch out to other fields of art because he's basically just a big-name fanfic maker.
Remember, this is probably the greatest living Disney artist, and he had this sort of issues. Not a pretty picture.
Which is exactly what I've wanted to warn overly enthusiastic fanfic makers about. The chances of you getting rich and famous through fanfics are not particularly good. Love of work may keep the things alive, but it's not something to bank your future on.
