Been playing Abyssal Apocrypha.
Overall I'm really liking the mod. Good music, is in the vanilla+ realm of total conversions where it's basically just vanilla doom with different models and some minor-some major tweaks to make things feel fresher and not going completely into the realm of the Brutal Dooms family of adding so many bells and whistles to the game.

If I had one complaint it's the slaughtermap nature of the end fights of every level I've played so far. The levels normally are very cleverly put together mazes and monster closets but it always has a nasty habit of teleporting you into some empty space with 6 dozen revs and three archviles and whatnot. To it's credit this only happens in the secret exit that exists in every level, you either go through the normal exit and pistol start the next level or you go the extra mile for the secret exit and you start the next level with all of your weapons carried over, which is a mechanic I really like.

Anyways I would like to bitch at Map8 for implementing a couple of things I cannot stand in doom maps.
  • Perpetually shifting map elements that use the mechanical *thunk* sound that you'd hear when you pass over a secret sector that lowers something leading to a secret. These elements are purely cosmetic flesh piston things in the inaccessible background but it's seemingly everywhere in the map and is a pain because I'm an avid secret hunter and constantly having this in my ear messes with me.
  • Weird switch hunting that makes the flow of the level feel off. Picture this.
    • You go into a submerged corridor with two paths. The path to the left leads you to a rev/archanotron ambush that leads to a dead end. You turn around and there's a switch behind a pillar that wouldn't have seen before. You press it and seemingly nothing happens.
    • You go to the other path which is an empty large room, clearly a monster ambush. You walk, ignoring the seemingly pointless floor that lifts up and down endlessly and eventually notice the switch on the far wall, because there are many switch textures in this map alone and you don't notice them easily. This triggers the demon closet. You kill all of them and... nothing happens.
    • You look around some more in the big room and there's a switch just hidden off in the sidewall of one of the alcoves that let the demons in. You press it and... nothing happens.
    • You look around some more and that switch opened a weird texture of one different alcove to reveal another switch. You press that and finally the door forward opens.
  • You know those maps that hide archviles somewhere you can't reach, but they can still revive enemies? This map has that but instead of archviles it's some inanimate object that pulses every now and then and it revives enemies. This mechanic is used way too often, with either shotgun/supershotgun zombies(those exist in this wad) or worse, the variant of hellbaron that has a homing projectile similar to the revenants but with far more aggressive tracking and a 100% tracking rate(As in all projectiles will home in on you unlike the revenants random chance)
I don't like this map at all.

On the other hand map either 3 or 4(I've been moving at a glacial pace with this wad) has been my favorite so far, a Resident Evil styled mansion(I think it uses a resident evil track for BGM here) with lots of really cool monster closets and a secret boss fight that didn't feel as slaughtermappy as the rest because it was in a tight room with increasingly sparse cover.

Hmm, if we're doing WAD suggestions that mine are Eviternity 1 and 2, I don't usually play WADs that aren't official but both of these are peak of Doom WADs to me. Evite 1 is a bit better, but Evite 2 is worth it for the music and secret levels alone.
Fucking Eviternity 2. I don't like slaughtermaps or super long ones all that much so naturally chapter 2's secret one ended up being one of my all time favorites. I just can't say no to anything that focuses on the rocket launcher.

Give Valiant a shot, I think you might really like it.

I've got a bunch of WADs sitting on my computer, its just that whenever I'm in the mood for classic Doom I usually go for the original wads or Eviternity. I'm sure I'll get around to them someday (hopefully)

I also find it odd that I ended up enjoying Evite 2 as much as did, especially since almost every single map seems to have a really big fight and be an hour or more. Map32 (Charge) is definitely one of the highlights, that and Map26 (Myriad) which honestly is one of my favorite maps of all time. While I've heard nothing yet and still a couple years off from 2028, I'm curious of if we will see an Evite 3 or even how that would attempt to trump the insane scale of Evite 2.

Man, both Eviternity wads are just really fucking good, 2 especially,

One of my best moments in Doom was first run of Map06 of Eviternity 2, I fucked it up so badly that ended it with fuckall health and ammo and decided to do a suicide exit where I killed myself with a rocket launcher and my corpse's momentum crossed the finish line and just did a pistol start of the next map. It was where I caught the pistol start bug and I'm glad I did because pistol starts can be really damn fun.

If you ever feel for something different I recommend the Skillsaw folder. Valiant and Ancient Aliens are both top tier megawads.
