You'd love the possession mechanic, then. Imagine ANY demon randomly becoming a superheavy on steroids that's also immune to stagger, certain weapons, with unbreakable weakspots and after it dying you need to focus and kill the emerging possessing spirit which can only be damaged with the plasma gun's beam mode. The final boss revolves entirely about that shit, and you have to fight two simultaneously.
While I did enjoy the DLC for Eternal I will admit that the final boss for both of them are some of if not the worst final bosses ever in gaming history

I like that more newer games are on GOG. But man, fuck that game.

Bought it on Steam a few years back during a Steam Sale, figured since I beat Doom 2016, I can give it a shot. Man, did newID really butcher what makes Doom, Doom.

The platforming makes the game unnecessarily more difficult and less fun. Popups about stupid mechanics is dumb. And the game loses connection to Steam because we need always online to record your progress because fuck you. And I’ve tried playing the game on wired, wireless, and through a hotspot. Shit always bugs me 15-30 minutes that the game lost connection to Steam.

Same thing happened with the bethesda port of classic Doom. Bethesda insisted on their own version a Uplay. even before Eternal was launched. I mean the skins are cool and all but why fuck would you want to play Doom Eternal with the unicorn skin.

I would laugh so fucking hard if this was always a thing even in builds before it was on GoG, and no one thought to do it.

I consider myself lucky that I got in on Day Zero with the executable that had no DRM, and beat the game in one go. I came back recently for a replay and heaps of stuff feels different to launch day. One little thing that annoyed me was that they fucked with the Weapon Wheel button so that even when you do a quick tap to just Swap To Last Weapon, it still makes the wheel itself begin to fade in, making the game unevenly slow down a little, fucking up my sense of spatial awareness and timing.
Not a huge thing, but a "why did this need to be done?" for sure.

Been playing Doom 1 and 2 via Pistol Start on UV. I'd always heard from some people about how pistol starting is like the trve and honest or just objectively better way.

Gonna be honest, I don't get the appeal. Feels to me that pistol starting is just some gimmicky thing that is a left over from Wolf3D that people blow out of proportion. I find that it A. makes the game feel even more same-y and B. makes weapons like the Plasma Gun and BFG have even less of a use case, and I often would find myself going "Man, I sure wish I had XYZ saved from the last level!" The only improvement was it made going from Hell Beneath to Perfect Hatred less aggravating.

I know the games would be "too easy" otherwise if you carried everything over, but it feels like a solution that creates another problem.

It's an acquired taste and really depends on what maps you're playing. I was in the same boat until it just clicked and I wasn't. I'd never call it the TRVE way to play Doom but it has some appeals to it.

Mainly that pistol starting makes secrets and exploration become much more important, getting that secret SSG is way more important when you don't have one. Another is that you don't have to give a fuck about saving up shit for the next map and can go all out at the end of a map with your only care being not getting killed which can feel cathartic as hell when the map does give you the plasma gun or BFG. If nothing else it is just a way to spice up a playthrough of a megawad that you played the hell out of and maybe find a new way to appreciate it.

I always viewed pistol starting a challenge-lite run. It's no UV-Tyson or pacifist or full Nightmare bullshit tier, but it's definitely more difficult than the average UV playthrough. Especially if the map creator did not account for pistol starters (so no early shotgun and bullshit like revenants in your face immediately because you're expected to enter the level with a full loadout or die).

adding onto this:

I think in the case of DOOM II, a better compromise would be clearing your arsenal after every episode like DOOM 1.

Yeah, its not so clearcut in Doom 2 because the divisions arent so well defined. That said, you can still kind of divide them if you want. (You get text intermissions on Map 07, 12, 21, 31 and 32. We can skip 31 and 32 for obvious reasons.

If we go by skyboxes, Map01-11 is the first third, 12-20, 31 and 32 is the second, and 20-30 is the last.)

I beat the first episode and am testing my theory out with the second and third, works better than I thought it would.

The trve and hvnest way is to use a keyboard and savescum every 3.2 seconds.
I remember a long time ago there used to be a flash version of Knee Deep in the Dead, probably one of my happiest days in middle school was beating it on UV keyboard only

yes I absolutely savescummed as well.

pistol starts are really only worth your time for wads that thought that far ahead, vanilla pistol start just seems like it would do little more than pad the play time of the level by 5 min. However most popular wads usually has like 12 different mapmakers making more or less isolated experiences, so it'd be weird carrying over weapons between levels for something like AA or Everinity 2.

Played Legacy of Rust again. Holds up pretty well. Until it doesn't.
- the enemies are not so much "new" as they are replacements/variants for enemies, with the respective enemies appearing less often to make these new variants.
- while I think most of the enemies do stand on their own, the dna from other monsters in them is undeniable. There aren't really any new guys that "feel" distinctly different, with the exceptions of the Banshee and maybe the Vassago.
- most of the enemies are half-hitscan in that they fire projectiles that fire extremely fast and/or have splash damage.
- music still holds up well, I'm really glad Bethesda/ID let them go with the less metal focused midis. I always never understood the whole metal aspect of Doom's soundtrack, was always more "fantasy rock" than anything.
- new guns are still cool, but the flamethrower dealing self damage is just... evil.
- "Spirit Drains" and "Soul Silo" are the real standouts of each episode, which is telling, since these maps are all entirely combat with little to no exploration. Good thing these are the standouts, since they were very clearly designed to be given the custom tile set for each.
- Episode One craps all over Episode Two

That being said...

The ending sucks. Like really sucks. Like Beyond Disease-riddled Gay Faggot HIV AIDs Super Monkey Pox sucks. "Brink" is unironically one of, if not the worst official map of all time. I would spend 5 minutes sperging about it, but just go play it on UV yourself, and get to the final section. Just play it, let it speak for itself. I'll let "Panopticon" with its broken triggers and bullshit gimmick slide, I'll let "Soul Silo" slide with the bullshit slaughter map ending, I'll let "Second Coming" slide with its bullshit low ammo gimmick, I'll let "Dis Union" slide with its bullshit E3M6 ass secret exit required rocket jump for the secret map, I'll even let "the Coiled City" slide with it just being "Arthouse Bullshit: The Level" I'll let all of that shit slide, because apparently the folks and Bethesda and ID did too. But who the FUCK signed off on "Brink"? Who looked at this piling shitheap of a finale and said "duhh okie!" "Brink" was not designed to be fun. it was designed with malice. This level is genuinely fucking evil. I hope Xasers copy of doom builder ceases to function and never works again. And you know what fucks with me? what really truly keeps me up at night? This level needs one thing, like just one thing, like just one single FUCKING thing: hit one (1) SINGLE flag in a map editor to make the Invlun at the end of the map appear on skill 4-5. and your map is fixed. That's all. just one singular fucking tick. Fuck you Legacy of Rust.

Tried Doom Deluxe. It's quite fun, a decent "midway" between vanilla combat and brutal doom-type mods. Wish there were some good wads to play with that are compatible with uzdoom.

So I have learned about Doom Eternal modding and have discovered some really interesting things within it..
Slayer vs Slayer- Self explanatory. Except it's just Quake deathmatch with dashing.

Doom Eternal CO-OP - This mod allows up to 3 players to play through the campaign. Probably the most appealing mod out of all of them.
