DOOM

Prince by name, King of MIDI by right. Rest easy.

As far as DOOM modding, has anyone in thread perhaps tried Deathstrider? It's classic Rainbow Six/milsim autism but overpowered, plus spellcasting. Modern GZDoom required. Has quite a few addons, notably including a bevy made by the Guncaster team. Definitely important to read the documentation and set up keybinds for this one. For how detailed and fun the mod is, you might be wondering why it doesn't have more traction. Consider the normal ZTroon audience, then read the following out of the mod's readme for a Hideous Destructor inspired addon, made by the author of the main event:

If the sort of mod where you manually refill magazines, step into black holes that revive enemies to charge up super powerful equipment, and can blow up doors instead of hunting for their respective keycards sounds like a good time, check it out.

Given the recent layoffs at ID (I think like over half the company got laid off, they're pretty much just a support studio now) the DLC coming out today for Dark Ages will likely be the last piece of nu-doom content we will ever get, if not the last ID title we ever get. Say what will about whether it's "deserved" or not, but this is pretty much the death of the most influential video game developer of all time. Don't expect any future ID titles to be developed in house ever again. Don't expect any more versions of IDTech ever again. it's over.

Very sad day.

One of the select gaming layoffs I feel genuinely terrible for. id Software is one of the last AAA companies remaining making worthwhile games (plus a worthwhile engine), and now they might be spiritually dead.

Nu-DOOM has run it's course, I think people are generally satisfied with the 3 games + DLC for now and it can go back to a dormant state; but the fact there might not come about a Quake 5 to potentially resurrect the franchise hurts. There's a higher chance of getting HL3 before Quake 5 at this point.

some part of me just wishes they had shuttered it entirely instead of leaving it a husk like it will inevitably end up being. When you start firing art guys and people who've been there for over 20 years, you know things are bleak.

Between this and Bungie getting gutted, this has been a good year for killing zombie husk studios crapping on things I used to like. Id, like Bioware, has for years been losers wearing the name of a once-great studio like a skin suit.

DRM removed from the base game.
Denuvo was hacked on D:DA a while ago without a hypervisor exploit. That said, it's about damn time they took that stupid DRM off themselves. It's already widespread today for those that sail the seas packed with all the DLC.

I'm taking a pass on Revelations. I wasn't crazy about Eternal because I like more grounded combat (no spear or chain for me). So I fired up DOOM II mods and I'm having a great day.

There's gonna be some crazy shit done with the Spear, feels like it has a really high skill ceiling. At worst it plugs a gap until you get your shield back...which didn't take long, actually. On Hurt Me Plenty I haven't felt the need to use both in the same combat encounter, but I imagine there will be some mad combinations to exploit.

Doom Guy is canonically Flynn Taggart. The story is absolutely going to divide people as much as, if not moreso, than Eternal.

In 30+ years, I have never once played DOOM for the plot/lore/backstory.
