Completely missed this Doom Awards thing. Even accounting for Doomworld bias, the stuff there makes it sound like a complete dumpsterfire, and the author sounds retarded.
It'd be nice to see someone arrange some awards/event to highlight cool stuff people make, and which isn't based in the Doomworld cliques, but that means actually doing that, not asking ChatGPT to vomit up some vague filler text void of any kind of substance, AI does not have interesting opinions on things.
 
I was a big fan of DOOM when it came out and still play it occasionally to this day. I never really got into WADs as by the time they actually started to get good, other FPSs came out that I became more interested in. That said, I've checked into the DOOM scene every now and again to see what's up. Brutal DOOM is not to my tastes, but I absolutely respect it, and Chocolate Doom and Crispy were a cool breath of fresh air when they came out. Nowadays I actually use PCem to play the official DOOM IWADs.

The Cacoward entry for myhouse.wad seems a bit ... disrespectful? Yes, I know that everyone knows about it, and it speaks for itself in that regard. But it is a legitimate WAD that obviously took a lot of work to do, regardless of how distasteful the presentation was. A single paragraph that doesn't even talk about the WAD? These guys really seem like pretentious fucks. Honestly, the entries have always been petulantly overwritten.

Oh, I was just referring to the frame story about the guy’s friend making the WAD and then dying and the Google Drive shit. It’s obvious bullshit. I’m just not a fan of lying about someone dying in general. It’s not a big deal. The WAD stands on its own without that gay r/nosleep shit.

Shareware DOOM is still completely free. You can download it from a quick search and copy the DOOM1.WAD file to where you have a modern source port installed.

There is also FreeDoom but that kind of sucks. Otherwise, legally you still have to pay for anything beyond the first episode.

Yeah, Freedoom isn't for everyone, as the maps were specifically designed to be more complex than Doom. If you're a fan of that stuff, then it's for you, but you're better off purchasing Doom if you don't want to get lost every few minutes.

It used to be better. The main issies are the graphics and the fact that Fraggle is niggercattle retard bitch who in pursuit of unfulfilling wish wanted to make sure it'll be compatible with every source port and original Doom' .exe files.

Though it was somewhat an okay-ish way for me to realize that I'm more of the paintbrush than engineer of cubic rooms.

If you don’t have experience with DOS you can buy the Steam versions, download Chocolate DOOM and follow the instructions to setup WADS and play. Start with The Ultimate DOOM as the levels are easy. Everything later is harder and assumes you know what you’re doing.

The Steam versions run in either a DOSBox setup which kind of sucks, or the shitty Bethesda update with censorship. Both suck. Chocolate DOOM gives you an authentic experience with better controls. I also like Crispy DOOM which has some enhancements, but it’s best to start with the vanilla experience as a baseline.

You can also ask a friend to ‘loan’ you the WAD files for free….
