After running around Limgrave leveling up a bunch I just beat Margit on my first try using the dogs. My strategy was to get him to his second phase, and then immediately summon the dogs to harass him and serve as a distraction since that's when he goes hyper-aggressive. I'd recommend anyone struggling with him try it.

Edit - Also, wouldn't be a new game release without something like this:

I just loved how the character creation features "body type" instead of gender, and yet NPCs in game refer to my character as "her". That's sure to trigger some twitters. Hope they don't patch it.

Any recommendations for a single hand sword for STR build (not greatswords)? I'm aftaid of overcommitting to a sword that will suck in the long run.

don't worry about overcommitting. straight swords are arguably the most consistent weapon type in every souls game, so it doesn't matter if it's an earlygame or lategame weapon, as long as you like the look of it you can max it out and beat the game with it.

Thats tough due to being just a Str build but maybe Lordsworn's Straight Sword could work with the right ashes of war. Drops off the knights in the beginning area. Also the fancier knight at the Gatefront Ruins can drop a Partizan, just FYI.

I've been digging my grand epee but I'm almost leveled enough to switch to a winged scythe I found for faith scaling. Is there a better long thing with sweeps I should know about before I burn the stones? (Post first shardbearer)

What the heck is up with that first boss... this is my first souls-like game so the first hour of attempts was basically just learning how the combat even works (I had to learn the roll isn't so much about gaining quick distance, but all about i-frames) but even still damn this bastard is ungodly tough... one mistake and a whole lot of good my completely unused health potions do when I get 100% to 0%'d. I've managed to get him really close, down to about 10%... but damn if not slipping up is hard. I guess I could use the summon thing, and maybe I will if I get too frustrated, but I want to succeed without it at this point.
Even if you don't wanna summon, leaving your sign to co-op and help other players beat a boss is always a great way to practice their patterns and even learn tactics.
It's less mandatory now that these games usually let you save before boss doors but it's still helpful and fun (and one of the best ways to grind a level or two if you succeed a few times).

just checking but they let you re-fight old bosses now if you co-op, don't they?

Yup. I just did king grafto a couple times again for fun and profit

I've put in 40 hours so far and still only have killed two of the main big bads. I tried killing the big dude from the original announcement for about two hours before giving up and going elsewhere, fucker is insanely hard. Just a tip in case anyone is having issues with limited heals, book it to the upper righthand portion of the map there's like 8 golden seeds just sitting out in the open every time you turn around.

I don’t know if other people found them - I saw someone mentioning finding no weapons - but those weird 8-wheel wagons by the initial ruins with the level up girl have chests in the back. I was hopping up to explore, got the prompt and was actually a little surprised.

Also, this game is gorgeous. Dark Souls did a great job of makin ruins look beautiful in the squalor, but adding actual beauty is awesome.

Still can’t get on the server though. :(

Been a long time since I've played any souls game (2?). I'll have to wait to my weekend to really play, but I was able to get an hour in.

Holy crap, stepping outside and there's actually green and friggin wild life. I might put real time into this game.

I’m not sure how I feel about Not!Seigward in this game, even down to the voice actor and character’s name having the same meaning.

In Souls, it makes sense due to the repetition of the world itself, but it feels a little too winky.

the whole "I go into a stance and immediately punish you if you dodge or attack, but otherwise stand there looking stupid for five seconds" thing feels a little overused

Been enjoying the game for the most part, but I was a little disheartened to see that the bosses are more post-Bloodborne endless attack combo spamming faggots. Margit was ludicrous, it felt completely random as to whether or not I was going to win. Can I actually smack him for once with this opening like I have the past three times or will he just shank me with his Christmas knife this time? Who the fuck knows, hope you enjoy having to spam rolls at the exact right time twelve times in a row or you can enjoy getting fucked.

Other than that, exploration is fun, the world feels grandiose and fantastical in a way most open world games don't. Breath of the Wild was all empty fields with absolutely nothing to see and nothing to gain. This at least feels like I'm going to find something interesting or face something challenging, even if the rewards so far are mostly shit I'll never touch.

Is there a single enemy in this game that has anything less than a seven hit combo?

Also I'd hold of on Margit. I get the feeling he's going to get nerfed pretty soon.

Yeah he's busting my ass right now. Haven't actually beaten any bosses yet (somehow missed Godrick)

My prediction is Margit get's nerfed in a coming patch. One of the devs already admitted on Twitter he's too overtuned for an early boss.
