I recently got into the Elite series, and am currently playing Oolite (on account of it essentially being original Elite plus graphics plus versatility plus not-going-to-melt-my-computer) and loving every second (except the ones I spend mass-locked when not in combat).

Any other people on the Farms play any Elite games?

Played them when they came out, so I guess I'm burnt out on the whole thing. Even played the buggy Frontier : Elite II. Dunno what they were thinking trying to emulate newtonian physics when the original game used the "star wars" style physics.

I think they just strayed into the 'realism > fun' trap. Even if it weren't buggy, having to dock with a station while minding the gravitational field of both it and the planet and also being unable to come to a standstill due to a lack of front thrusters wouldn't be fun, at least not if you have do it every time you want to land.

At least it didn't make the distances realistic.

I play elite dangerous, and it is good, despite your misgivings. Newtonian physics aren't as much of a shit as all that, especially if you have flight assist turned on.

Elite Dangerous is a doddle. Please come and try out Falcon 4 if you'd like to experience realistic air combat.

I'm quite the fan of exploring in Elite Dangerous. Just wish the credit payout for discovering new things was a bit higher. You'd think an earthlike planet 1.2 AU from a mainline star would be worth more than a few hundred credits.

It is, if you use a detailed surface scanner. You'll get several thousand credits.

I loved the spirograph nebula. The first planet that can be landed on was so close to the star that getting off planet was a bit of a hassle since you had to actively fly away from the star in order to not fly into it. On top of that, it was a metal rich world with 2.26G. Launching a type 6 was a bit of a chore.

Never got around to play Elite back in the day...
But now, I am playing Elite: Dangerous and I love every second of it. After 300 hours, I still enjoy docking and landing manually I'll go through dry spells where I don't play for a couple months every now and then, but ultimately, I love coming back to this game and lay back while I fly around the bubble in my improved Python. Somehow, in terms of Space Sims, this game is perfection for me. The way how you get from one place to another, the flight model, the way how combat works, everything is just really enjoyable to me and the sound and art design is amazing.

I'm not so keen on spaceship designs with a shitton of clutter on the hull and weird shapes everywhere like what you'd see in the X-games. I love straightforward designs, so I love the look of the wedge-shaped ships of Elite.

If you look carefully at this one you can see a grayish splotch just above the running lights of my ship. That's a black hole from about 11km.

This is headed away from the black hole towards the local star. In an image above you can see the bright blue white of the star and how it turns almost violet from the lensing effect.

This game is a damn Wallpaper creator.

A White Dwarf. Flying into those blue rays will damage your ship (or destroy it when you drop out of frameshift) but it gives your jumpdrivea neat boost. And they look gorgeous.

The California Nebula. I was heading to Maja in a Vulture. I completely underestimated how annoying it is to fly this far in a ship with a tiny jumprange and a shitty Fuelscoop. Traveling long distances in my Cobra or Python nowadays is so much fun. At least I was rewarded with a nice view.

Speaking of which... After engineering the shit out of this thing, it jumps 27 lightyears, scoops fuel faster than it can recharge the drive, carries 200t of Cargo and it tears through anything smaller than a Cobra in the blink of an eye.

Every time I see ED screenshots I fire it up, just to get bored after about half an hour in. That this game doesn't have time compression just because IT HAD to be online is really killing it for me, I just don't find flying in straight lines through black space for tens of minutes on end that interesting. Took a look at OOLite, saw it has an active modding community which is always interesting. Let's see if it's playable.

This is one of my favorites because the low overall light from the star brings out the running and engine lights on my ship, plus all the lights on the station too.

I find that Elite becomes less of a time sink if I keep Netflix running on my tablet while playing. I caught up on a pile of shows I never finished while playing.
