Escaped calf swam in Danube to Lower Austria
A calf escaped Saturday morning in the Mühlviertel, swam to Lower Austria and was finally shot. The calf had escaped , when it was driven at 9.00 o'clock with other animals on the pasture.

The 48-year-old farmer from the district of Perg pursued the 300-kilogram cow, supported by the fire department. The animal ran from Saxen cross-country over the Danube road (B3) and the tracks of the Danube embankment railroad to the Danube, swam through it to Lower Austria and came ashore at the premises of a company in Ardagger (district Amstetten).
Stunning would have worked only after 30 minutes
The calf continued to run through an underpass of the Greiner Bundesstraße (B119) into a quarry. Since this area is directly adjacent to the federal highway, the owner decided to shoot the animal because of imminent danger. According to the veterinarian, anesthesia would only have worked after about 30 minutes.
