Facebook has apologised after labelling a passage from the Declaration of Independence hate speech and removing it from the site.

Texas-based newspaper The Liberty County Vindicator was posting passages from the declaration to celebrate July 4, the USA's day of independence, when the social media giant removed a post containing paragraphs 27 to 31 of the famed document.

The newspaper received a notification from Facebook informing them that the post "goes against our standards on hate speech".

Facebook were quick to realise the mistake, restoring the post and sending an apology to the Vindicator.

The newspaper shared Facebook's apology on the site, which read: "It looks like we made a mistake and removed something you posted on Facebook that didn’t go against our community standards.

"We want to apologise and let you know that we’ve restored your content and removed any blocks on your account related to this incorrect action."

In a Facebook post, the Vindicator said: "The Vindicator extends its thanks to Facebook.

"We never doubted Facebook would fix it, but neither did we doubt the usefulness of our fussing about it a little."

Paragraphs 27 to 31 of the Declaration of Independence contain the following text: "[The King of Great Britain] has abdicated government here, by declaring us out of his protection and waging war against us.

"He has plundered our seas, ravaged our coasts, burnt our towns, and destroyed the lives of our people.

"He is at this time transporting large armies of foreign mercenaries to complete the works of death, desolation and tyranny, already begun with circumstances of cruelty and perfidy scarcely paralleled in the most barbarous ages, and totally unworthy the head of a civilised nation.

"He has constrained our fellow citizens, taken captive on the high seas to bear arms against their country, to become the executioners of their friends and brethren, or to fall themselves by their hands.

"He has excited domestic insurrections amongst us, and has endeavoured to bring on the inhabitants of our frontiers, the merciless Indian savages, whose known rule of warfare, is an undistinguished destruction of all ages, sexes and conditions."

Casey Stinnett, the newspaper's managing editor, speculated that the phrase "Indian savages" might have triggered the hate speech algorithm.

Mr Stinnett accepted that the phrase is offensive, however he explained to the Daily Wire how "Jefferson, like most British colonists of his day, did not hold an entirely friendly view of Native Americans".

This is one of those times where I question the process.

Was this entirely the algorithm just flagging the post itself? Does that mean the algorithm gets free reign (like on YouTube?) without human oversight unless requested?

I don't know if that's worse, or if it'd be worse if a human read it and approved the flagging, because they haven't read the DoI.

I mean it is a forgivable error if you actually aren't familiar with the text of the DoI. It makes sense that you read that sentence and go "Yeah, that is a little fucked up."

don't forget last year when npr tweeted out the doi and trump supporters lost their shit thinking it was about him lol

More proof for the non-idiotic that you cannot make a perfect society by policing "hate" speech, no matter how pure your motives.

Free Speech

It's free, or it doesn't exist.

Just because it's a non-government entity that's "allowed" to do it as part of a TOS doesn't mean the end result isn't a disastrous ruination of that forum.

Yep. Freedom of speech is as much a cultural value as a legally-protected right. Anyone willing to celebrate the suppression of speech they dislike and smugly declare it's technically not a rights violation obviously doesn't appreciate the cultural value and is probably even hostile to it.

It's almost like Facebook doesn't have actual moderators like they previously stated and still rely solely on bots that ban on mass reports.

Bots do not understand context. They can't think like people and go by keywords. I get that it would be difficult to moderate something as large as Facebook effectively using humans. But until AI gets better I think that hiring some human mods would be a good idea. The vast majority of reports are probably just trash from triggered adult babies anyway. Most reports can just be deleted.

It's things like this that make me worry the culture war may become an actual war. The far left just does not seem to know where it's red line is. Where what they are doing has gone too far to be taken peacefully. The efforts to deny basic scientific truths and force people to censor their own thoughts and speech is bad enough, but the outright hostility they are starting to show to bedrock principles such as the nation, inalienable rights and belief in the (christian) God is straying dangerously close to the point where politics stops being a debate and starts being a battle where people are killed for it. You are starting to see people casually talking about rounding up professors and far left activists and shooting them. And actually mean it. The rhetoric on the left is little better either. Anyone who thinks this "could never happen here" is kidding themselves.

I believe that's the current algorithm for it.

Certain amount of reports --> Delete/Ban by AI --> Person requests reasoning or wants reinstated --> Actual mod comes in

But I've seen it far too many times, it just takes a group of speds to mass report a page they don't like to get it banned and/or deleted and typically an actual mod still won't do jack shit and will hide behind vague 'Community Guidelines.'

If you haven't noticed, the left are the ones hankering most for violence (whilst being the least prepared for it)

And that's what these Marxists fucks want. As soon as they provoke a real fight, their absurd crying about the "literal violence" they're facing from their "Nazi" enemies starts to look a little bit less crazy to the uninformed, and they'll magnify every blow with screeching and crying. Then they get to become the biggest living victims imaginable, which I'm sure makes them salivate just thinking about it.

And the people who might die? (Won't happen to them, of course.) They can always be positioned as martyrs for the cause.

Might've had human user reports as well. And generally these algorithms have the ability to take posts down, at least temporarily, until a human can review it. And it might be that the human needs to be requested by a counter-report.

The phrasing seems old-timey, I can't imagine a human moderator (unless they were in a call center in India or some shit?) would mistake that for modern hate speech.

This isn't true. Generally companies as big as facebook are using neural networks now. Those take the entire post into consideration.

You can't just throw a "nigger" into a post and get it flagged. It'll read the usage of the word in context.

Heh, now maybe an algorithmic analysis of the Declaration of Independence would find it compares very similar with what we'd consider hate speech nowadays. Maybe a very similarly phrased post, just without the historical significance, would be considered hate speech by even a human moderator.

Really makes u think...

Nah.

At worst we'll get riots. We've had riots before, we can deal with them.

Like, the biggest riots in the US have always been race riots. Ignoring the fact that black people in the US have legitimate grievances against the police, black people are like 15% of the US population.

There's no way that the number of insane leftists who are willing to riot come even close to the number of black people willing to riot.
