What is everyone's favorite D&D version?

I had this conversation earlier with Surtur, but the version I probably appreciate the most is Advanced Dungeons and Dragons. Mostly due to it's simplicity compared to later versions that seem to add a great deal of rules that tend to confuse me during encounters.

Also adding Pathfinder to the poll mostly because people do consider it a version of Dungeons and Dragons and it is based on the 3.5 ruleset. Also skipping 3.0 mostly because people tend to skip it entirely for 3.5.

3.5 is my bread n' butter, but I'm impressed with what I've seen of 5th so far. Just waiting for the DM's guide to be released before I really get into it.

4e is the one that I've played the most and started with, so naturally I'm biased towards it.

This depends on what kind of game I want to play:

If I want to play a very tactical game, I would play 4th Edition.

If I want to play a modular, flexable system with rules for pretty much any kind of campaign, I would play 3.5/Pathfinder.

If I wanted to play something rules light, I would play 1e/2e if I wanted more old school flavor or 5e if I needed something newer players may find easier to understand.

I'm a big fan of 5e but then again, that's the only D&D version I've tried.

I do like Pathfinder but I haven't played it as I had a bad PFS experience and really haven't done much since. I like Pathfinder because the wargame aspect of combat is cool but I still haven't gotten the hang of all the tactical stuff in battle.

I like the way 4e works. It doesn't allow for much role-playing, unfortunately, but it does have a very solid tactical system. I like the idea of using spells as a fighter. I haven't played 5e, how is that different may I ask?

Out of curiosity what happened?

I played a PFS game. I forget what module but pretty much because my dwarf fighter had no ranged weapons, I couldn't attack the boss and I got killed. But then it turned out the DM accidentally rolled the wrong number of dice for damage so my guy is actually alive. So I have no idea if he's still considered alive or dead in PFS.

I've been turned off Pathfinder since. Might give it another go someday. Right now though, it's easy for me to play D&D as there's a game shop enar me doing Adventurer's League.

It's old Skool all they way for me.

Poison is save or die.

Rocks fall, everyone dies!

Kids these days...too damn soft.

We've mostly been playing a mix of 3 and 3.5 since I've been gaming with friends. Though some of us are starting to look into getting into 5 soon.

@exball , @Sweet and Savoury , if you guys like teh oldschool, check out Dungeon Crawl Classics. The best way I've heard the game described is, "Its as if someone tried to make Dungeons & Dragons as it was in 1974 but using all the game design knowledge we have today in 2014," and its a fairly accurate analogy. It brings some of its own ideas to the game as well, such as character generation (character generation typically isn't "pick a level, pick a race/class, etc" as much as it is "generate three or 4 level 0 farmers, run an adventure, and the one or two that come out of the other side are that player's characters")There are some great resources out there if you want to learn more about the game.

And if you want a module to compete with S1 or WG6?
