The big problem with feral hogs is that nothing short of a .50 caliber hunting round is going to drop them.

Good eatin' on them bastards, though.
Thumpers like .450 Bushmaster are pretty effective but I agree you're not going to stop one of these things with a .223

I'm kind of mixed on the meat though, I've had it and it's pretty gamey, more so than elk or bison. At least to my pallet.

I've got cousins that managed to have a good round of hog hunting with both .45-70 Government and .444 Marlin.
 
They're smart as well, and the big ones especially can do some damage to a person. I hear they can be challenging to hunt for those reasons.
