I haven't played WoW in a long while either, but there are some things I prefer in FFXIV over WoW
For one, you can only create one character per server unless you want to pay extra per month, but you can take on as many classes as you want. And some of those classes level up with each other. For example, on my current character, I pplay two main classes that when I gain a level on one, the other gains a level as well.
The community is usually fairly friendly, if sometimes very weeb-y. Depending on the server you might have some idiots roleplaying in the major cities, but it usually isn't too bad if you stay out of the roleplaying servers.
You can also customize your gear really nicely, if you're into that sort of thing.
And playing with people you know is good, because when you hit a dungeon, if you have three other people at a certain level who are available, you can just run through the dungeon with them instead of waiting in a queue. However, playing with randoms has never been bad in my experience.
Some of the quests are kinda fetch quest-y, but the main quest is pretty fun to play, and you can do it at your own pace which is nice.
All in all, I prefer it, but I know it's not for everyone
