Would have been wild to see a footy club named Dynamo in the superturbomegacapitalist Amerika :story:
I got news for you...
Houston Dynamo FC
1763906947949.png
The newly relocated Houston team was named Houston 1836, paying homage to the city's founding date and the logo featured a silhouette of the Statue of Sam Houston, in Hermann Park. Immediate backlash to the 1836 was voiced by the Mexican community claiming that date, the year of the Texas Revolution was not a date that should be celebrated. Ownership decided to change the name to the Houston Dynamo stripping the franchise of the Sam Houston logo.

Americans don't know why some European clubs are named Dynamo, do they?
Nope! I think they just picked it because "OH SHIT THE MEXICANS ARE MAD" about the original Houston 1836 name, and Dynamo sounded vaguely cool (similar to dynamic in English).

But most of the MLS names are nonsense. I'm not aware of any clubs that merged (on a MLS level) to become United. There's a Real (Spanish pronunciation) club... in Salt Like, one of the whitest cities in America. (Basically, “Spanish names sound classy.”)

The TL;DR is: The original "Dinamo" or Dynamo" was a sportsclub founded in Soviet Russia in the 1920's and was linked to the NKVD (basically the Gestapo but for commies). After ww2 everywhere in the commie zone more Dynamo clubs got established, usually with ties to the country's own branch of commie secret police, police or army. E.g. Dynamo Dresden had ties to the police forces in the DDR. BFC Dynamo Berlin was massively linked to the Stasi and Stasi boss Erich Mielke.

Apparently the same thing with Dinamo Zagreb, only in (then) Yugoslavia, although there's been some retconning to reflect the pre-communist club that the commies shut down.

The MLS clubs just don't have a lot of tradition, so they have to manufacture it where they can. I kinda get it, but it all feels so shallow when you learn about the rich traditions in Europe and even South America. The converse to that in the MLS is Vancouver Whitecaps FC, which has a muddy but direct lineage going back to the 70s in the old NASL.

More on Vancouver's stunning performance last night, when I get rid of this hangover.

Not a Tottenham supporter by any means, but I'd love to see Arsenal in the Championship one day (a pipe dream, I know.)
Go right to jail. Do not pass Go, Do not collect $200, and no get out of jail cards can be used.

Anyways, Inter Miami are in the Conference championship. Messi with a goal and 3 assists. Looks like he has figured out which trophy actually matters in MLS and he's taking it personally

Going to take a break from European action to talk about interesting title races going on right now.

First in Italy where Roma of all teams, currently lead with 27 points after 12 games. They are followed by both AC Milan and Napoli on 25 points. Inter and Bologna are on 24 points with Como taking the last European spot with 21 points. Juve and Lazio are sitting outside Europe on 20 and 18 points each. It really feels like a fun title race as there are a ton of teams at the top who could falter for a game or two and then the table completely shifts. Notable absences from the top of the table are Atalanta in 13th place with 13 points and Fiorentina in a relegation spot of 19th place with 6 points and only not at the bottom of the table on goal differential. Have to imagine that changes as well during the year so I would expect this season to go crazier

Next in Scotland where Hearts are currently deciding to shit the bed. They have a game more than Celtic so are sitting in first on 30 points with 13 played. Celtic are in 2nd with 26 points after 12 games played. The next 3 of Hibernian, Motherwell, and Rangers all sit on 21 points. It seemed like there might be a new winner in Scotland but since Brendan Rodgers left, Celtic seem to not suck anymore. Rangers have now sacked their chief executive and sporting director, making a full clean house while former Sheffield Wednesday boss Danny Rohl has signed on as manager. He is actually a decent hire considering he kept a Sheffield Wednesday team in the Championship for 2 seasons despite them paying everybody in IOU's

And finally is League 2, which you have to believe me, is currently batshit insane right now. 17 of the 46 matches have been played so far and 6 fucking points separate 1st place from 12th place. In fact, the point total to be safe from relegation is 16 points, which is only 16 points away from the top (what I mean is that the difference between 1st place and 22nd place is 16 points). For context, the equivalent of this would be Arsenal to West Ham (which is 5 teams less than league 2 btw) and their gap is 18 points. Anyways, League 2 is a bit different than other leagues as they have 3 automatic promotions with 4th through 7th entering the playoffs. Currently, Walsall sits on top with 32 points, Swindon are in second with 31 points, and Bromley take up the last automatic promotion with 30 points. The playoff spots are taken up by MK Dons with 29 points, Notts County and Chesterfield on 28 points, then then Gillingham of GD with 27 points. Just missing out is Crewe Alexandre on 27 points. 9th through 12th place are all tied on 26 points with Grimsby Town, Cambridge United, Fleetwood, and Salford City in there just separated by GD. Colchester and Barnet are tied on 24 points followed by Oldham Athletic on 23 points and Tranmer in 16th place on 20 points. Honestly, it is the most competitive and exciting league atm, unless anyone can think of a better option

Everything from the Championship to the arse end of L2 is a great watch. Stopped watching Premier League football years ago, in part because the endless churn of faked drama and bullshit that the media come out with over it. It’s just so over-hyped, and I always get the feeling it’s being geared towards foreign fans rather than Brits.

The Championship is competitive as all hell, League 1 is as predictable as the weather, and League 2 is much the same. The standard of football is still good, and there’s plenty of local support for those teams. It’s what the game should be about, rather than the bullshit prawn sarnie American plaything brigade of the Prem. the game just feels more real outside of the top flight.

I really want to see Bradford back in the top flight. They’ve consistently had strong support for decades, no matter what. In a city where it’s all too easy to sidle over to Dirty Leeds for somewhat of a success, Bradford pack their ground and keep their local character. Feels like what English football should be about.

Real is particularly egregious because it literally means royal, the king of Spain would personally give that title to clubs he liked, mls branding just reeks of insecurity "we're just as good as the European leagues guys please watch us"

The lower leagues are always a fun watch because they're a remnant from a time where football wasn't so commercialised and tainted by big money and the times where that is in the sport it's always some insane rich bloke not understanding football like chansiri with wednesday

That being said the prem is somewhat breaking from it's old predictable pattern of top 6 dominance, once people started to understand pep's system better and slots disaster so far the games have become more exiting recently imo, I fucking hate football journalists and their obsession with the big six, the athletic (a sports based publication) rarely talks about anything football related outside the big 6 prem teams and the top teams in other European leagues, sky sports made a graphic of the top 55% of the prem table just to insert liverpool lol

I fell out of love with most football for a long time after all this Sky shit started. It’s just such a self-congratulatory, fake pile of crap. There are thousands of genuine Liverpool fans, of course, but why bother when you can milk foreign fans for money, as well as sponsorships and tv rights? The money rules the top end of the game and I hate it. It’s having bad knock-one effects further down the pyramid, and yeah, the likes of that absolute wanker Chansiri are a huge part of the problem.

I don’t know why so many Americans are buying our national sport. They’re buying shitty little clubs all over Europe. Birmingham City’s owner talked about the Premier League needing to keep more money and not spread it throughout the pyramid. His plans for the Brummies looks disastrous, but of course flashing cash makes everyone happy at first. Everyone wants to be a Wrexham (so far). No-one wants to really fund a football club, because it’s a loss-making business now if you don’t make it more attractive to Americans and Chines and Africans than Brits.

They’re trying to manufacture and monetise 150+ years of localised culture and identity, and they’re the same types that’d balk if you accused them of cultural appropriation (well, maybe not the Saudis). It’s fucking rank.

I could rant about this for days. Hat me, I deserve it.

Edit: Speaking of the stupidity of American owners, apparently Sheffield United’s American owners looked at the possibility of buying Sheffield Wednesday (and even merging the two). This is why they shouldn’t be allowed within fifty light years of our game!

It's a complete disregard for the local histories and culture of the game, I'd honestly rather it be like turkey where refs get paid off at least that way the corruption is obvious (not to say pl refs aren't corrupt they give an enormous amount of leeway to big 6 clubs)

speaking of big 6 clubs, SUFFAH!

I hate the lot that say "I root for all English teams in Europe" where's your rage?
