Husqvarna was the same way. Started making non-military things but were contracted to make rifles and that side of their business grew out into a massive industrial concern before being spun off (to Carl-Gustav). now they are back to making tools etc like they began with.

comes from a time when any machine shop or factory could be easily re-tooled to make guns. especially common in Europe and Asia where the state was the source of most firearms sales. Here in America there was a large enough civilian market to create firearms only industrial interests.

Matt really is starting to deserve his own thread at this point. I’ve personally heard nothing but horror stories about RTI.

The grades they give rifles are utterly worthless, not even close to industry standards. They do a lot of scummy stuff like not adding pictures of the examples they are selling. They’ll list something as ‘C’ grade (their version of ‘fair’), post a picture of an ‘A’ grade weapon, then state in the disclaimer that the picture is not representative and the firearm is not guaranteed to actually function.

When they sold their ‘restored’ MAS 49 rifles it looked like they didn’t even clean them before rebluing them.

There’s a reason that they are so cheap, it’s the stuff that all the other importers didn’t want to touch.

RTI is only good if you can shill for them online. And for your sins you get to handpick a few guns while your audience suffers.

Bro at this point RTIs business model is just import questionable slop, let Ian talk about them in exchange for skiming the top for interesting stuff while they sell the balance to his fan-boys. I doubt a single one of those carcanos went to somebody who wasn't subscribed to him.
 
Or Valmet which stands for Valtion Metalli, literally State Metal, is a state owned company that made everything beneath the sky. Trains, planes, paper machines, tractors, cars and related to this discussion guns as well. Being state owned, when there was an interest to have some domestic industry, everyone just looked at them as they had the know how and the tooling to do it. Since then they have shed a lot of their different businesses to other companies of which Sako and Patria are relevant to us. Still they have 19k employees around the world and is a big player in industrial automation amongst other things.

There's probably many stories like this around the world.

Isn't South Korea the promised land of these huge industrial conglomerates that make everything from toothbrushes to anti-tank missiles, all under the same brand name?

They're extremely well run. They had large amounts of cash on hand too. When they bought Marlin from the Remington Bankruptcy auctions they paid out ~30 million and didn't have to take on a ounce of debt to do it.

turns out not solely relaying on foreign military sales or US Govt. contracts like Colt FN and SiG can be very profitable.

Mitsubishi doesn't just make parts, they build IFVs, MBTs + SPGs for the Army. They also build submarines and destroyers for the Navy

Ruger's one of those odd ducks, in that they're both publicly traded and not profoundly short-sighted. They seem to understand that long-term profits depend on people not hating them. Rare trait when shareholders get involved.

Ruger is publicly traded, but I'm pretty sure the oldest son (David Ruger, I think) has a majority or controlling interest.
