Matt (and Ivan presumably) have elected to take this most recent happening with the NFA case, to smugpost about how they are so much smarter and righter they are than everyone else while also not elaborating to the unwashed masses what the legalese actually means.

Instead of actually doing something to help clarify the issues and give guidance to their clients, like countless other actual lawyers have been doing for the past 24 hours, they elect to be snarky little bitches on twitter.

As a side note, no one knows what’s going on right now. An LGS by me had the guidance they got from their legal counsel change 3 times yesterday. The latest was as of right now suppressors are business as usual however come Monday they will have a way to do them on a 4473 if you are a member of one of the plaintiffs. It sounds like they are getting their ducks in a row/building the paperwork to cover their asses.

To be fair to them even though they are being smug, I don't think anyone really knows until the ATF releases its guidance on Monday and you can be sure that will have a growing errata appendix over the next two months.

So why even bother trying to clear up the legalese if it is in flux?

And that's also all assuming that the ATF doesn't just do what they normally do by leaving the language intentionally vague so that they can just arrest you on a whim whenever they feel like it.

Tell me more, if you can. I'm rather curious.

I have not read Tobacco (nor do I intend to) but I've read his Armax article about the imperial mon, and I was kinda puzzled by the claim that "it solved the mystery" (it's extremely baseline knowledge that you can find with a cursory Internet search and a couple of books, so maybe you have a point), but your claims are rather extreme. This guy is apparently writing another book about Nip medals, are you sure he can't read Nip? That would be hilarious.
You can see the author on Gunboards and Facebook asking for stuff quite often. The fact he's looking for obscure out of print English books instead of just consulting the readily available Japanese books is a massive red flag. Him asking others to translate Japanese documents for him is the funniest IMO. He's not a terrible guy or anything, just very clearly an amateur way out of his depth. I have no idea why Ian thought taking him on was a good idea.

I did run a cursory search on him, and he has like two sites and a quite a few appearances on weird stuff (a podcast on drugs talking about Japanese opium cigarettes?). He doesn't seems like a fraud, more like, as you said, a very eager amateur working a bit out of his depth. I mean, he'd probably be a good mate for a beer and some discussion.

Trained historians usually should not work on subjects when they do not fully grasp the language (the risks of publishing self-reinforcing mistakes are great) but Ian himself wrote a book with kind of a shaky grasp of French (and let's be honest, there's quite the difference between Ferguson's output and Ian's own writing already) so I guess another amateur on a very niche subject that no one knows a lot about probably wasn't a red flag.

Writing wrong "Emperor" on his Gunboards posts doesn't fill me with confidence, though....

Someone tell him that the entire country is on X and you can talk to them now thanks to Grok. There's no need to ask Americans for info on Japanese history when you can easily ask Japanese people yourself.

And apparently, YouTube just continues to harass them, now nuking their Sako TRG video
And none of these guntuber faggots is going to take this as a signal to have backup channels on other platforms because muh monetization! and muh audience! is only on YouTube. Except for when YouTube yeets your fucking videos and no one can watch them anyway.

Watching it now but one thing that stands out is at the 15 minute mark. Lucas references the infamous Aero AR-10 burn down video where he abused the Aero AR-10 by trying to go to 5K rounds with out cleaning or lubricating, something you don't do to AR-10s

Aero in general is a good example of how fickle the guntuber community is. I remember 15 years ago EVERYONE recommended Aero and then the whole mid tier snobs, dunk on the poor memes became popular and suddenly they were trash and people wouldn't stop licking the nuts of LMT and KAC. I'm sorry but the vast majority of people are not going to drop 4 grand on a rifle.

A point in guntube's favor is that 15 years ago the AR market was still confused as to what is good and what wasn't, assembling your own(including the upper) was considered the only way to go and Aero was known to be the reliable big brand at the time. Circa-2011 a lower was a lower*, a barrel was a barrel, buy the cheapest LPK because the GI trigger works fine and build another upper if the first isn't good because parts are plentiful. Today everyone's making parts that are allegedly not shit while charging premium prices and the only reviews being done by guntube are pointless burndowns, one magazine run through it or super niche setups with a narration that never seems to get to the point.

*except Anderson because there's a nonzero chance none of the holes line up and even the buffer retainer is too far back and chews up your buffer. A guy at a gun show almost swung on me when I decided not to buy his stripped Anderson lower, guy bought an entire table with that single thing as his only product.

People turned on Aero when they started selling ARs at Geissele prices(the OOS M4E1 Pro is listed at $2k on their website) and rapidly announced/released products to chase trends(tactical lever actions, byo bolt gun parts, suppressors, etc). The final nails for most people were the drop in QC along with extreme wait times for products bought directly from their website. If you believe industry gossip they also screwed over suppliers and wholesale customers with long wait times for payment/fulfillment.

On top of that the general public found out through Lucas and commenters that "assembled uppers" from Aero had fine print that said they weren't intended to be used out of the box, you had to pull the barrel to grease the nut and properly torque it down. It wasn't as damning as shipping out lemons if they shipped at all, but when you buy an assembled upper you want it to be usable straight away.

Yeah and it felt like it stayed there until 2020 then the snobs starting call Aero poor and referred to BCM as mid because they didn't offer things that KAC or LMT offered which are really unneeded luxury features.

I felt like it was before that though, I really think the Lucas Aero AR-10 video marked the moment when people went after Aero because the younger generation of shooters are watching Lucas's content and then it turns into word of mouth just bashing Aero's product line. In our own Mega Rad Gun Thread, if feels like younger shooters there are just hopping on the Geissele band wagon and saying anything else will just get you killed.

I do agree what got the rest of the market against Aero was their price gouging in the latter part of the pandemic combined with expanded product lines when their QC was having issues but it felt like customer base Aero should of been the first choice for younger shooter under 30 turned against them very quickly and that probably hurt Aero a lot.

RIP the best value proposition build: an Aero lower combined with a BCM upper.
