This might be the dumbest opinion on the way youtube is going to treat branded content out there. No, it's actually not good just because shills are going to get caught up in it. It's GOING to be either expanded again like they keep doing or just straight up used arbitrarily to target others. And what about channels that aren't shills that use brand sponsors like Othais and Ballistol? These retards are too caught up thinking they're the arbiters of what constitutes good content to see the forest for the trees.
Exactly. These policies are never fairly applied. Believing only people doing ad reads or receiving free products from companies for review will get swept up by things like this is incredibly naïve. YT intentionally uses vague wording in their policies to justify their actions, and their AI driven moderation constantly hits videos that don't actually break the rules.

Note that the policy being discussed does NOT use the term "firearm," but the far more vague "weapon." Damn near anything can be used as a weapon. Will channels/videos centered around knives be subject to enforcement? What about channels/videos about archery and bow hunting? Intentionally vague.

I agree with Othias about why they won’t just ban gun content outright. A ban would cause an exodus and a viable alternative platform to actually be created.

This is the comment I left on Stoegers video about the subject: https://youtu.be/mGcg25_g_2I?t=733

“The real long term consequence here is less access to information and slowly killing the gun culture.

Edit: some of you responding probably weren’t alive and participating in the gun culture before YouTube existed, and if you were you don’t understand how influential it has been to making performance based shooting, competition, and martial application as mainstream as it is now.

I have been on YouTube since 2006 and have personally talked to thousands of people who I influenced into competing or getting in tactical firearms and training since then.

Your attitudes of “fuck the shills” will have a butterfly effect you don’t want in the long run.”

It’s doubly retarded when you consider Jon’s entire business model revolves around said shills continuing to exist and do funny things. No shills, no Big Toe Money. I get that a lot of guntubers are annoying, but don’t bite the hand that feeds you buddy.

“You don’t understand, if I kill this goose, I could get tomorrow’s golden egg today. What do you mean ‘what about the day after?’”
t. this dude and any other tryhard alogs.

Just to piggyback:

I suspect the shilling is a symptom of the already unstable platforming. Because if you can't just make an advertisement, then this form of product placement is the only way. Everything has to be blended in so YT can't fuss.

The unstable and abusive platform has also effectively capped the quality of content you will get. Shorts are already rewarding AI trash, but even at the core it's a mess. C&R could pin 100k people into watching an hour long video and make less than $150. We have been at it a decade and I could increase my personal pay tomorrow by getting some basic job in town.

Quantity sells because it is a fluke when a gun channel gets good ad rates (though ours are regularly the worst of even guntube and I have no idea why). The sort of ads we get make this a spiral, as they are horrifyingly gross, overtly sexual, scam bait that wears on the human soul. Most of the allowed in-video ads are scam games, repackaged vitamins, and unnecessary subscription cash grabs. The sort of thing that clearly reveals the host has zero respect for his audience.

Most presentations are either opinion or wiki-level research with a personality smeared on top because taking any longer to prepare is a huge risk as any video can flatline for no discernable reason. This has driven up the value of parasocial addiction and explains why "lets go boys" culture has taken over.

Building on what Othias is saying: A lot of the critiques people have for how the industry markets and conducts itself are the result of not being able to market normally and just pay for advertising.

This is why people do all of this shit like use gun bunnies, engage in culture war rage bait, parasocial engagement farming, It is unfortunately what it takes to make people even aware you exist as a gun business.

Aren't all the magazines you trudge through full of shilling? How many reviews would you trust from them?

Anything contemporary yes. However, you do get things like articles about the Steyr GB two years after they halted sales that go into more detail. Also collectors magazines dont cover items in production so no interest in covering for the advertiser. They will, however, never criticize an auction company etc.

There have been better and worse magazines over the years as well. Handgun Tests refused all gun advertisers, only accessories as they didn't review those. Man at Arms tends to have strong, detailed articles that don't appeal to the newstand crowd. These had to paddle against the flow like we do because that was the paper industry. There really isn't a reason, however, that our Primer series shouldn't have high-paying commercials like cars, dishwashers, etc. We do nothing offensive to the average person. Doubly so now that we have the classroom look. It's just "old history channel" stuff now.

I'm not saying we would compete with drama on views, but we shouldn't be imprisoned in the land of scam ads just because a gun is on screen. Most movies they rent feature not only guns but violence.

Triply when you consider FT/Jon is one of the "shills" he is talking about:
His last video on the Gundeals channel, some random chinesium mrds sent for free for review and under the assumption that people will watch the video and then go on Gun(dot)deals to find a retailer to buy it from. But I imagine he makes more from parasocial superchats than contracting for Gundeals, so maybe its okay to sacrifice an income stream to own the shills.

No that's totally different bro he doesn't do this stuff anymore completely stopped he's above it all bro he's just ironic and aloof now.

Surface reason: Because banning a market segment means some other platform would then have something YT doesn't have. Better to just prod it into being advertiser friendly and still get their cash.

Sub surface reason: Nudging the overton window by controlling speech. Cut them off and they will find another platform. We have already seen this before. TV really limited how it displayed guns and gun law. The 90s were a real low. Forums and video online really saved 2A by spreading the culture. If they ban it might trigger another strong migration and without the rules it will get wilder.

Honestly a YT ban doesn't scare me as much as this boiling frog method. The trouble is if you are the only channel banned...no mass exodus.
Maybe I'm just too cynical these days, but I don't feel like an exodus would happen. While yes, it was with a much much smaller community, and they were far less dedicated to any IRL actions the near complete banning of the right wing on social media spaces during late Trump 1 and going into covid did not result in any large exodus of audience, truth social was nothing more than a parasocial cult hangout for megatrumpers, and no one really used it beyond grabbing screen caps of trump posts and reposting on other walled garden social media. If anything, king idiot elon buying twitter is what saved most of their social media presence, leading to a pseudo adoption by big tech because they thought they could get a better tax deal and government funding from cheeto hortler instead of sleepy joe. I just don't see the average gun content consumer really doing much of anything these days, the average joe has always been worthless at any real political action (even getting them to write their representatives can be an impossibility) but I feel with how addicted the average person is these days I just don't see them doing anything if you just snatched it all away like a child with a bothersome toy.

Basically agree

They had like basically a decade since youtube made it clear they wanted them gone to potentially will a new platform into existence. I think only that ian dude ever seriously attempted that and every single time it was subscription service youtube which is by far the most retarded and utterly non viable concept i've ever heard of

Like literally every one of those sites is and always will be a coughing nigger baby on blood oxygenators born with inadequate lung volume and with no potential of ever functioning independently and which will die the instant people stop bothering to keep it alive out of pity

Anyway they kindof wasted all their chances so its pretty over for them

Lots of legalize here, but it's pretty much the democrats trying to sue guntubers and dealers.

(lazy GOP voter, we we got.. get on this nov)
