Talk about leaks, old, new, fake, real, etc. Let's start with a poll and a discussion about leaks lately.

Lately, the "anyone can make a fake leak" argument has been so overdone that, yes indeed, anyone can. What with the Rayman in Smash leak that fooled virtually everyone (and got me to buy Rayman Legends after reminding myself to get it after beating Origins) leaks have been very hit or miss. The only leaks that were extremely high quality that managed to be true as of late, to my knowledge, were the Final Evolution Starters leak from Pokémon Sun and Moon. The only ones that come up are photos, no videos except a few very well edited ones like Smash 4 on the screen of the Nintendo Switch, but most are word of mouth now.

Then there's people like Liam Robertson and Marcus Sellars who are in this war right now of who's not credible.

Except he's guilty of it too

"Splatoon 2 and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe are completely false" while also hanging on to Pokémon Stars and Rabbids (which was inevitably true but this was for the January Presentation in 2017) and ironically, Splatoon 2 and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe keep topping charts, and MK8DX has been in these charts in the UK since launch.

And there's this as well

Lately he's been sperging about other shit and not giving leaks and keeps secrets (which is good. This shit costs jobs like shop lifting.)

So this brings me to my next question

Do you still believe in leaks?

At the very least I doubt leaks that are text-only or with few images and hold if just a teeny grain of salt for more convincing ones. I'll admit though that I have been wrong about doubting certain leaks before(Smash 4 Hype Season was quite a ride), so I never know. It's not worth fussing over.

The absolute sperging that occurs over vidya leaks, real or fake, really fascinates me though. Like I know some places on the internet take video games way too serioisly but just damn.

The overwhelming majority of "leaks" surrounding videogames are just a coordinated marketing effort. Genuine information leaks concerning an in-development title almost never happen because it's all but a guaranteed blacklist from the industry and a financial penalty for violating the NDAs that are involved in virtually every single game ever developed, and there's really no reason to leak the information anyways.

Just look at that "leak" for the new (old?) Spyro game, for example. The company comes out and goes, "Oh no, there was a leak! This is the worst!" and within 15 minutes every single game news outlet in the world had full, comprehensive articles on the games, and pre-made promotional content was slathered all over YouTube and social media. I can appreciate the marketing ploy, because people love to see things they're "not allowed to see yet", but it's long-since become just that: An incredibly transparent ploy.

I think really bad leaks can be pretty enjoyable in their own right. It's practically a tradition for there to be fake leaks of new pokemon starters that look hilariously out of place.

Details are nothing when unreleased games gets leaked.
The most supreme one out of any is Star Wars Battlefront 3.
It may not be horrible but it's the closest we can ever get from playing the full thing.
One day, the 99% complete build will be released, just wait.

(Smash 4 Hype Season was quite a ride)
I remember the big list of people getting blown out after "disproving it" and the one that gets me is the guy saying Duck Hunt was two seperate renders of Donald Duck and Pluto.

Video Game Historian? That's a job? Why? I mean, archivist I can understand for intellectual property rights... but historian? Do board games have historians?

As for the question... no, I don't take leaks seriously, but I don't really care to look for them either.

It's not a legit leak unless it has a whistling song in the background.

Leaks are always fun

I mean Devil May Cry 5 has been leaked multiple times and is like the worst kept secret ever.

There were also the ones like the Wii being able to play DVDs which was leaked multiple times and then when it came out people went "see, those leaks were fake" and then it got torn apart and people found code inside that they totally implemented a DVD player and just chose to disable it making those prerelease leaks true again.

There was that MGSV story "leak" that was complete bullshit but was fun to read even after Kojima Productions came out and said "lol this is fake"

The best kind of leaks are like the Crysis 2 PC internal dev beta being leaked out early or those half life dev maps that had HL3 data, people got so mad with Crysis 2 that the whole game got leaked but it was super fun seeing the janky weirdness of the internal build.

This is still my favorite fake leak though.
