I'm making a separate thread since I think the "can't find a fucking job" thread is more for someone immediately in need of any advantageous employment.
But say you've got money and income enough to buy your little forever home in some economy-forsaken place like Oklahoma. Land can be had cheap, and you can produce most of what you need, but if you still need income, what do? You're not looking to commute 20 hours a week, soooo. . . ?
One option, at least in the USA, is Over The Rosd trucking. I and other people discussed this in other threads, but long story short, if you don't mind only seeing home once every 3 weeks, you can get your mail in the fuckass middle of nowhere and still pull down 90k a year, very reasonably. With a few years experience, you can outdo that, though it does tend to plateau even if you're an owner operator unless you find specialized work, which usually requires you to live somewhere in particular. Getting a cushy daycab job is also a dice roll; the cheapest places to live generally don't have a lot of job opportunities.
There are many jobs where you travel "OTR" besides trucking, too. You could work on windmills, install systems in businesses and homes, or even literally work on the road for DOT. These are "weekly rate motel" kind of jobs, which aren't that different from.OTR trucking in my opinion except that you'll spend less time listening to audiobooks.
But either way, if you want to really push towards self sufficiency, you're probably also interested in producing your own food, whether homesteading or doing commercial ag. The former doesn't bring in a lot of dough for things like taxes and also taxes (health jnsurance) and the latter usually at least requires a second job at first and possibly long term. A garden doesn't do well if the gardener is only home 3 days out of 30.
So that brings me to what I'm most interested in-- remote work. For my own purposes, I'd really like to find something that makes at least 50k a year, that I can learn to do without needing a special degree, and isn't phone sales. Really, the less it's a matter of being on shift for eight hours and instead of accomplishing tasks on my own, the better I can integrate it with the rest of my life.
That's just me, though, I'm not naysaying any advice anyone has to come up with fiat funny money without needing to live near and commute to a city.
