I'm back in Pensacola and you can't exist in the south without getting a vehicle, so I'm looking into buying.

My old car was a 2000 Mitsubishi Gallant and I really loved it. I like light cars. Anything super heavy that doesn't respond well to its gas pedal is kinda shit.

So, my list:
  • ~$25k
  • 4 door, good back seat
  • Light / responsive to break + gas.
  • Hopefully American, esp. Chevy. My Mitsubishi was a pain to get work done on b/c of its engine design.

Any suggestions?

Used Volvo S60. You won't be needing much engine work to begin with and one can be had for that price point if you go back a few years.

Oh cool, I live 20 miles from Pensacola.

I bought a '13 Honda Civic EX sedan for about $22k when I moved here. Fits all your requirements other than not being murican. And if you leave ecoboost on it drives very sluggishly - and with the traffic around here (98....) it's pretty much worthless anyway, so I don't bother. I tried a Dart, Focus and Cruze and they all rode uncomfortably. The brakes in my Civic are great and have saved me from many-a horrible driver around here, and there are a LOT.

I'm sure there are Honda dealers in Pcola, but if for some reason you find yourself in Fort Walton, do not buy from Gary Smith's. Trust me.

I got a Consumer Report magazine on Monday that lists the best cars under $25k for 2014 models:

They are:

Small Sedans

Chevy Sonic (lol, Sonic)
Honda Civic, automatic & manual
Hyundai Elantra
Kia Rio
Mazda3 touring
Subaru Impreza premium
Toyota Corolla LE Plus

Midsized Sedans

Honda Accord LX
Hyundai Sonata GLS
Kia Optima LX
Mazda6 Sport
Subaru Legacy 2.5i Premium
Toyota Camry LE

They also have wagons and midsized SUV's but I don't think you want those.

Let me know if you want prices.

1999 Buick Century. I know a really cool guy who drives one of those...

Last year I traded in my 2000 Chrysler LHS (big sedan) for a 2010 Scion XB and I love it. But if you're looking for a sporty American sedan, one of my friends drives a new-ish (1-2 year old) Chevy Malibu SS that's pretty nice. You also might look at the Ford Fusion. I rented a loaded one a few months ago and it was really nice - it had Bluetooth sync and a touchscreen in the dash.

BTW, go to McGuires' Irish Pub if you get a chance. They have lots of neat Blue Angels memorabilia tacked to the walls. And check out Town & Country Bingo at Pace and Fairfield. I used to service their computer bingo card minders.

Mazdaspeed3. 265Hp, 0-60 in under six seconds, and you can get a newish one for under $25k.

This. My dad bought a (slightly) used Mazda 6 a couple of years back, and it's great. I'm not sure about the Mazda 3, but In my experience Mazdas are pretty good.

The Ford Flex is one I'm considering as well, especially if Mrs. Dude and I have more than one more kid. Seating for seven and lots of room.
