In tabs it's an icon of a rainbow G. Which is probably gay.
 
Call me old fashioned, but the serifs implied some air of legitimacy or the kind of trustworthiness of an old and well-established business. Even when others were changing their logos to match fads at the time, theirs remained static. Kinda crummy to see it go, now it looks like "every other logo".
 
Is YouTube the only one now that hasn't changed their logo in a number of years? I don't think I can recall any other "big internet" business retaining their old one.

When Windows Office changed their font in 2008 to a san-serif it was a statement that we are entering the age of the computer, I assume this is the same statement google is trying to give.
