This week Niantic announced that they're working on a Harry Potter augmented reality game.

Almost five years ago Niantic launched Ingress, our first augmented reality mobile game, turning real-world streets, neighborhoods and cities into a global game board, and bringing people together in a shared digital reality. The incentives it created for exploration, exercise, and real-world social interaction helped spawn a global community of fans, united by their shared experience, and laid the foundations for Niantic's real-world AR gaming platform.

Pokémon GO brought that vision to the world at unprecedented scale and served as a catalyst for the further development of the Niantic Platform.

Which brings us to today…

We're incredibly excited to announce this next step in the evolution of AR mobile entertainment. With Harry Potter: Wizards Unite, players that have been dreaming of becoming real life Wizards will finally get the chance to experience J.K. Rowling’s Wizarding World. Players will learn spells, explore their real world neighborhoods and cities to discover & fight legendary beasts and team up with others to take down powerful enemies. We're thrilled to partner with Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, and WB Games San Francisco’s development team to bring this magical and beloved series to life in a brand new way. Harry Potter: Wizards Unite will leverage the full stack of the Niantic Platform while also providing an opportunity to pioneer all new technology and gameplay mechanics.

We look forward to seeing you outside on your next adventure. Stay tuned to our social channels for updates as we work to bring this game to life.

...And unlike Pokemon, this sounds like something that will come and go like it's no big deal, due to how Harry Potter is really nowhere near as big as Pokemon is.

Then again, Pokemon Go was such a fucking r.etarded fiasco from Day One to begin with. Why would anyone try this again, other than :autism:, is my real question.

Because it was a "fisaco" that made over a billion dollars in revenue.

It's smart business. Throw a couple bucks to some art teams to make new 3d models and such, reskin the Go game, and rerelease it. It doesn't NEED to be anywhere near a big as GO, it just needs to make money, which with all the programming and infrastructure groundwork allready there, is child's play.

It will make the big bux with adults nostalgic for the books and films and kids who always love stuff wizards and dragons. It wont make Pokemon money but enough to be profitable. You kind of wish they would make a free-roaming Harry Potter game where you can wander around Hogwarts as a student you design and name and have to go lessons and learn spells and befriend people in the school or a action game where you play as an auror.

The Beta just went live in Australia and New Zealand. From the initial newspost it looks just like Pokemon Go: go to a Pokestop, throw some spells at a Boggart or something, get points. Recharge your mana 'Spell Energy' by paying real-world money going to muggle inns and eating and drinking (more Pokestops). Let's hope it doesn't take a year for them to finally implement raids.

Honestly, Harry Potter isn't my thing anymore, but I hope this app brings with it plenty of entertainment for us all to enjoy.
