Anyone play these games? I used to love them back in the day and I just started playing them again and remembered why I liked them so much. 64 and Back to Nature are my favorites but I played the shit out of Save the Homeland and A Wonder Life Special Edition 20 years ago.
Just wondered if any other Farmers enjoyed virtual farming as well.

Oh yeah, anyone play Stardew Valley? Fag shit aside it's not terrible and the fag shit is pretty much determinant on how you play from what I've seen.
Still though Harvest Moon>Stardew Valley.

I'm going to deadname the series and refuse to call it Story of Seasons.

One Story of Seasons game, the Japanese version of Harvest Moon DS Cute, had allowed players to marry someone of the same sex (termed the "Best Friends" system). The feature was removed from the North American version over concern its inclusion would have raised the game's ESRB rating.

In the remake game Story of Seasons: Friends of Mineral Town, players are allowed to marry someone of the same sex. In the Western release, it is treated identically to opposite-sex couples. However, in the Japanese release, it is not referred to as marriage proper and instead brings back the "Best Friends" title.
fucking based lmao

honestly I wanted to try harvest moon a few years ago, but i think i only played it for a few minutes, cuz i already had stardew valley (i didnt really play stardew valley either)
I used to play a lot of farmville and similar as a kid tho

I played a lot of the old Harvest Moon games. I have two Story of the Seasons games I still haven't gotten around to. I haven't tried any of the new Harvest Moon titles because they seem to have a lot of negative reviews. I think I just got kinda bored of the genre when the market got flooded with farming sims. I do like Rune Factory games though. I'm not sure where they belong from the Natsume/Marvelous split though.

Stardew Valley is odd. It's like a farming game but there's also a bunch of other stuff too, including combat in dungeons, there are quests, there are other places to travel to, there's honestly a lot to do. You hit all kinds of points where you think "Ok this must be about it for what's in this game" only for something entirely new to open up.

It also contains one of the most exotic and appealing fantasies in all of modern gaming: moving away from society out to a quiet community, onto a plot of land you inherited, cultivating it, then marrying and having children on your farm. You don't even have to pay taxes!

Homo nonsense kind of exists, but that's predicated on the player choosing to become a homo, since NPCs respond the same regardless of your gender. The only progressive thing outside that is probably that the one carpenter lady in town is married and has a kid with a black dude scientist.
I also suspect the girl Emily is coded to be a lesbian since she's slightly dykish, and as your relationship level progresses she has a dream featuring your character that literally contains rainbows and pink triangles, but again that isn't set in stone; funny enough the transexuals online are all obsessed with her sister, the airheaded blond one, and have decided she's canonically a lesbian since they find her easiest to masturbate to.

Allegedly the playerbase is actually majority female with like a 60/40 split, but idk how true that is. It's absolutely a little fruity but very charming.

Had the N64 one back in the day. I didn't understand the appeal of farming games, though even back then it could be really cozy. My brother always went for Elli.

Honestly I'm surprised that Harvest Moon isn't as popular in the autism community like Sonic or Pokemon is.
Maybe it's the idea of "hard work" turns people off but it's a satisfying game to play, Stardew Valley is cool in that you kinda have more control over your farm and it feels bit more hands on, but the characters aren't as cool.
Back To Nature is like HM64 on hard mode in that one in-game hour is like 20 seconds if even that. I feel rushed from leaving the house, tending to the animals (inside the barn and coop time stops, thankfully) but if you have a fuck ton of crops and you have to water each one individually it can take up an entire day, so no time to hit the mines, forage, fish, or try to woo your wife, but seeing the money go up day to day is just really satisfying.
I'm playing Light of Hope and once you start mining and you level up your hoe it's insane the profit you make. Almost too easy I think.
HM AWL fucking drove me nuts because one sleep cycle isn't a day. It's only 8 hours and every time you do something or walk if fatigued you stop and snore, it's really annoying. So eating is a must.
They remade AWL into Story of Seasons and they introduced the faggy "non-binary" thing, and it's 40 dollars, so I'm gonna stick with the PS2 version if I ever feel like punishing myself with that game again.

Hate to be a nag but isn't there already a Harvest Moon thread in the Games subforum?
Dead though. And this thread is just more me wondering how popular it actually is outside of a forgotten thread.

Shit the blonde in SV is the one I married because I always liked the idea of a city/valley girl becoming a nice housewife. And to be fair, marrying the blonde (Haley?) she actually becomes very useful. She'll water your crops for you, but if you have the sprinklers already it's kinda moot, but funny and sweet in that she's trying to help not knowing it's already automatically done.
Stardew Valley is fun until you start getting the automatic petters, auto feeders, sprinklers to autowater, then it just feels kinda pointless. Wake up, harvest sell. There's the mines too but once you get the community center finished it kinda feels like the end game from there.

Extremely cozy. I remember from like 2001-2005 every winter there'd be a blizzard and I couldn't go to school for a few days and HM64 then later the PS2 games came out and those are my winter cozy games. HM 64, South Park 64, and Turok got me through the coldest winters of my life

I just know that in one version, if you married as a girl, the story ended lol
It was Jamie from Magical Melody, I had to dig through my history to find it, I knew I read the page last night.
It was a last minute add on, they didn't code in the character which was male or female opposite of your gender to have lines for marriage so, according to another page I read that I can't find, the canon reason is you marry Jamie and leave the village immediately I guess.
But who plays Harvest Moon for the Canon? They reuse the same character models with the same names multiple times.
In HM64 and BTN I always married Karen. Two different characters, the exact same look and the same name just in HM64 she was a drunk and in BTN she worked at the general store. Like in HM64 Popouri was the flower shop girl and in BTN she was the chicken farm girl, and on and on.

I played friends of mineral town more times than I can count, sometimes I can still hear the track in my head
"Dooo dooo dodododo Dooo dooo dooo do dodododoo" fuck that game was good.
The series is under praised. I like the violent games like GTA and God of War and stuff, but sometimes it's nice to chill out with Harvest Moon. Harvest Moon is like the smooth jazz of gaming

I rented Harvest Moon SNES like 7 times in a row and played the crap out of it back then. Was thrilled when I walked in one day and it had a for sale sticker on it. Still have the cartridge stashed away. I've never actually gone back on an emulator or anything though despite kind of meaning to just to check it out again. Seem to recall feeling like it was fast paced and would make me feel rushed, but it's not like I would be pushing for the perfect ending anyway. Sort of one of those things I wonder if I would lose my fond memories if I booted it up I suppose.
Back to Nature was definitely my other time sink in the series. Played a little bit of the Ps2 games but didn't click with me. I did play the touched up PSP version of Save the Homeland a good bit. Enough to finish it and remember marrying Alice who was apparently a new addition. Haven't convinced myself to really give any of the newer games a try, most seem to get mid to low considerations. The newest iirc was seen as the best in ages but still iffy.

Story of Seasons I've mostly skipped since they did the marriage stuff. Even then was tempted for a bit to try Mineral Town since I played BTN a lot but I just don't want to give them money for some of the changes. Most of the character redesigns I don't like and while I wouldn't say they were originally super deep, some characters seemed toned down in personality. Having not played it though maybe I'm way off.
I've also not been sold on bothering with newer Rune Factory games for the similar reasons, though I did mess around on 4 a good bit. Never picked up most Nintendo consoles so anything that was mostly on them wasn't even an option for me.

Funnily enough, I think the only character who makes any kind of reference to this is Leah. If you're a man and hit on her in one of the earlier scenes she gets mad and calls you a creep or something iirc. But if you're a woman she says something like "OH you're also...?" The later events where her ex shows up as far as I know is always a man or woman based on if you're playing a man or woman. Had no clue that Hayley was popular with the creature types though. I like her because I felt like she has basically the only character arc in the female options and watching her go from uppity to rather chill was neat.

Funniest part about this is I get to the part where I can repair the boat to go to the island, and both times sort of just stopped there. Did it a third time with the new farm that came out, but I do intend to actually go to the island finally. Just wanted to do something else on a different game first. Whether I actually will return though who knows.

Harvest Moon DS stole a lot of my childhood. Loved that game beyond words. I've gone on to enjoy Stardew Valley quite a bit but those old Harvest Moon games were something special.

A Wonderful Life, where you grow old and have kids and eventually pass away, should be replicated more often in the farming sim genre.

I tried to get into Harvest Moon, i own the SNES and N64 versions and i just don't find all that interesting. Stardew Valley does offer a ton more (and once you use Mr. Clean and turn Maru and Demetrius white, it's all fine, just stay away from the Ridgeside Mod as it introduces a pedophile tranny, then again, there's a mod with which you can kill NPCs, so you can just murder that monstrosity) and thus is definitely superior.
Harvest Moon just gets boring super quick. Even Farm Together 2 is more fun.

HM64 was so popular in my house that my sisters and I had fights when someone was hogging the game and another of us wanted to play. I got FoMT when I didn't even have a GBA but did have a Game Boy Player so I just played it on my GameCube. I pre-ordered AWL and got a cute cow plushie that I might still have but haven't found in years.

I haven't really been into the genre in probably 15 years though. The Harvest Moon IP is a skinwalking imposter, Story of Seasons seems kind of stagnant, I tried Rune Factory once and didn't like it, and I bought Stardew Valley a year ago but haven't played it once.

That's news to me, I don't think you can get married in STH, I know because I tried wooing Gwen way back in the day, but STH was another game that seemed pointless. After you saved the homeland, you just kinda farm forever with no real direction unless I missed something.
I've also not been sold on bothering with newer Rune Factory games for the similar reasons, though I did mess around on 4 a good bit. Never picked up most Nintendo consoles so anything that was mostly on them wasn't even an option for me.
I remember back in school the other HM kids hyping up Rune Factory like it was going to be God of War meets Harvest Moon but I never heard anything about it. I never even saw it for sale anywhere.

I forgot about the boat, yeah I recant my statement about the community center. The boat was another goal to aim for but what you get for all the work didn't seem worth it to me, and I watched the update for months waiting, then when it came I was like "meh"
That update was a huge deal for it because PC had it and it took forever for console to get it but was it worth the wait? idunno, I wasn't wowed by it.
I hated that when you fixed the bus or whatever and it took you to the desert. I hate desert settings. HM One World is one of the most bat shit crazy games in the series because there's a desert area where you replace with your horse with a camel to ride and the music is all Arabic and shit. But you will pass out there a lot.
It's supposed to a place you can grow shit like pineapples or other hot area crops but I didn't spend a lot of time with that game. Very convoluted.

I remember fucking up my older brothers save files on HM64 not really knowing what I was doing, and making his wife hate him by giving her (Karen) weeds constantly. First time I got my ass beat by him was over Harvest Moon now that I think about it. Your wife WILL leave you in HM64, never tried it with the others but I know divorce is a thing in Stardew Valley. Unrelated but I remember putting my dog in the bathroom in 64 and he was gone forever because he walked into the black off screen nothingness.
How would Alex Yiik make Harvest Moon?

I like the Rune Factory series that spun off from HM. I played HM64 before I played Frontier in the RF series. Not knowing RF evolved from HM, I thought it was oddly familiar how Raguna in Frontier levels up doing farming stuff. Latest I played in the RF series is 4.

I think that vidya uses some battery for memory which is lame.

What was Rune Factory about?
I was lead to believe it was like God of War but once you defeated an enemy you could put them on a farm. Like if you battled and defeated a Unicorn you could have unicorn in your stable but I think that was a bunch of 4th grade bull shit and wishful thinking of kids that didn't know what the fuck they were talking about.
I still don't know what Rune Factory is, I memory holed it along with River King

This has always stuck with me. "Push THE start".
I don't know why but it always cracked me up.
