Joking aside, the thing about the prequels is that they had some cool ideas that could have worked, I don't think the sequels really had that.

I still like the idea of Rey joining Kylo Ren to fight against the resistance. That would have been a nice subversion and make her less mary-suey.

That would have been fun but that never happened. Compare that to something like the Trade Federation and I actually cared about the Independent System bullshit even if the movies sucked.

I think we can all agree that the sequel trilogy was Godawful. However, I personally think the rot happened with TFA, NOT TLJ. TFA was just a shotgun blast of incomprehensible mystery boxes that could not possibly have had believable resolutions. And TLJ was Kennedy getting some weird revenge on Lucas and acting out her feminist power fantasies by way of Rian Johnson. TRoS is one of the most idiotic examples of filmmaking I've ever witnessed (much to my regret), but not unsurprising given the previous two outings and the choice of director.

As for the PT, it gets a lot of justified hate, particularly TPM, but it has two potent things going for it - 1) TCW series and 2) it didn't massacre any beloved characters in the pursuit of some current-day agenda. For those reasons alone, the PT is the far superior product. Oh, and the world-building was exemplary, which was practically nonexistent in the ST. The architectural design of Coruscant is particularly memorable.

Does Lucas deserve an apology? Yes and no. Yes in the sense that I don't believe his ST would've been anywhere near the dumpster fire that was Disney's rancid effort. It may've been weird, what with all the Whills stuff, but it wouldn't have been a complete rejection of Star Wars' history.

But no in that he sold the Lucasfilm IP off of his own free will to a company that despised having to deal with legacy baggage, mainly because he couldn't come to grips with all the PT hate...which was kinda stupid considering everyone seemed to love III and TPM was a fairly distant memory at that point.

But, hey, the man got a little over $2 billion plus a bunch of Disney stock by signing on that dotted line, so maybe he would've sold LFL off anyway, no matter how much fan reconciliation happened wrt the PT.
