Happy Festival of Reckoning, Helldivers! May your enemies burn bright!

My girlfriend got me this game for Christmas, is there a place that's not gay that I can find people to play with? Preferably without having to install discord. I tried it out and on my first run, two high level players joined and just team killed me repeatedly. I literally know nothing about the game. I tried to do another run, and was then repeatedly team killed by different people.... so I assume this isn't a game to play alone. Unfortunately none of my friends play this.

The teamates get better at higher difficulties. At 1&2 most people are farming for supercredits and might be killing you for not playing along.

first run? Sorry to hear. Teamkilling is never usually a problem. The premium currency in the game spawns on the map as pickups and high level players revisit lower difficulties to collect them but usually they would do so in private lobbies. My suggestion is either try again because you were super unlucky or just set the lobby to private and clear difficulty 1. It's piss-easy as long as you have experience playing any shooter and you can experiment with the game's mechanics, get a feel for the character controls, the way the game's gunplay works, etc at your own pace.
figures that the only people retarded enough to try to farm supercredits on difficulty 1 are also retarded enough to kill new players (difficulty 1 missions are always really small and have little in the way of pickups compared to difficulty 3)

first run?
Yea, it was the very first thing I did after the tutorial of getting your cape. About 15 mins in 2 players joined, orbital dropped on my direct location and just smoked me as they spawned in.

Admittedly I know nothing about the game other than "It's like starship troopers, and it made some people mad a couple months ago". I haven't been following it, but I've played plenty of shooters. I'll just have to do some reading or watch some youtube fag I guess to get a better understanding of the mechanics and meta game.

To be honest I haven't experienced this kind of bad game feeling. My last rounds were with good players who knew what they were doing. Though we played on Extreme diffculty (Level 6) so maybe it filters the riff raff from the good ones. Though sometimes accidental teamkills happen (like calling in artillery too close or even someone running into your MG barrage)

That sounds like it could have been a genuine accident. Generally if someone is trying to kill you they will just shoot you outright. Helldivers do a lot of damage and don't have much health. Red strategem beams are incoming danger, explosives, bombardments, blue ones are supplies, weapon drops, turrets (which can still kill you, beware), etc. And it should go without saying that one of the drop pods landing on you will kill you. For reference, high level is 50 - 150 so the players you met might have also been quite new.

Just know that dying is of no penalty. You have limited (though regenerating) lives per mission, but beyond running out and losing the mission there is 0 penalty to losing lives. No lost points, no costs, nothing. Dying is expected.

On your first few at lower levels I'd either join other people's to get a feel for it or start kicking up the difficulty. Lower levels gets a few trolls who hop in to shit on new players. If you just want to solo it you can turn off public matchmaking at the least.

Don't sweat the meta too hard unless you are on very high difficulty. I've met a few who will chimp out but most often nobody gives a rat's ass. Mute their stupid ass and continue on. If all else fails execute them for faggotry.

They could just bring over the bad guys from Jak 2
That idea in particular could work quite well for an opposing humanoid faction in Helldivers 2.
Bad idea. Even if your steam is totally unique you should keep your KF and other handles seperate.
The best way for kiwis to play Helldivers 2 together is to let your mutual autism bring you together while playing with randos.

That just means you need to do a higher difficulty. Or your situational awareness is ass. One of the two.
I swear I die to stratagems that don't display the big red laser of death. Happens a lot. A eagle just comes out of nowhere and carpet bombs me with no warning

If they could fix the red laser issue I'll gladly accept my retarded deaths

A part of me wants larger scale maps with more then 4 people for shits and giggles. Don't know if it could handle it but an 8 man group of helldiver's and twice as many enemies sounds fun.

Most of the time when that happens to me either I don't notice the big red laser or I dive in the wrong direction when a teammate calls out that I'm too close. I don't think I've seen the laser being absent, just that I'm looking in the wrong direction.

I think the limitation then comes from the engine and it's ability to model the sheer amount of enemies to handle at that point, assuming the netcode doesn't start screaming mercy if you go over 4 players.
