Hide or Die is essentially the Battle Royale genre meets the Slasher game genre. Players have to do X number of objectives in order to either (A) leave, (B) become the killer or (C) drive away the killer by taking away their power. I've been following this for a while and thought I should make a thread.

I'm getting Dead by Daylight vibes from the trailer

Hide or Die Steam info said:
GENERAL
Hide or Die is a large scale multiplayer horror game set in a world corrupt with darkness. Dozens of players take the role as survivors, hiding out in remote bunkers, clinging to their last bits of resources. They must gear up, locate abandoned extractors, re-activate them and escape before the darkness fully consumes them. As the game progresses the darkness will corrupt even the strongest survivors, turning them into powerful and terrifying killers whose goal is only to kill those who remain. When the Darkness overtakes the world, the players with the most darkness are deemed The Chosen and are given the role to guard one of three bunkers which become the only possible escapes for the remaining players. This intense last-minute rush to escape is where The Chosen partake in a killing-spree in this brutal end-game with a fortune in rewards for doing so.
Oh ok, so the Darkness is your timer and turns certain players into super bosses at the end. Well it's gotten me interested in the mechanics so far, so I'm gonna keep an eye on this.

These asymmetrical games never seem to do well, despite how cool the concept is (Friday the 13th, EVOLVE, etc.) I hope this one does well.

Honestly, I'd love to see something light a fire under Dead by Daylight's ass and force the devs to balance their game. Either that or they'll double down with micro transactions and more DLC costumes.

The idea isn't bad. A lot of what made PUBG so special(in the beginning) was running around scavenging and stopping if hearing something. Then move from place to place, nothing happened, bring up the map and make a plan then move from that place to another place, pap-pap-pap, now you are either dead or won a surprise firefight.
The tension and dynamic of that could, as a whole, translate very well into the basics of Slasher Royale type game.

I have some concerned questions.
1. Players turn into killers. How/why? Is it (local) dodgeball rules where if a player gets taken down they switch teams? If it's the black mist causing it, why not just go sit in that until you become a sparkly jumpy parkour killer, that's what people will do unless...
2. Is there a downside of being a killer that would dissuade people from trying to turn into them?
3. Do the player have a choice of which type of killer character he/she will turn into or is it just random?
4. Is there a limit on how many killers can be active at the same time?
5. If a player kills a killer does he get the killer-powers and become him? Is this like Highlander?
6. What if your buddy your playing with turns into a killer. He won't kill you/your group of course... So maybe you can work together and fuck over everyone else.

"Slasher Royale" seems like a decently solid concept that could be fun but I'm not so sure from what little I know of this game.

The biggest fuck up I think asymmetrical games make, is that they try to fuck with the balance of the game play in order to get more players on one side, or the other, rather than fucking with the rewards. The way I'd do it, is that I'd implement a token system in which you'd get tokens based on play time for the "needed" side, and these tokens could be used in lieu of real money for micro-transaction bs.

I might try it if it was free to play, but it looks like a purchase game.

I still want a horror themed Rainbow 6 Siege

The best and most active one I've ever played is, strangely, the Vs. Saxton Hale fan mod for TF2. Where one team is just one guy with obscenely high stats but can only melee, while the other team is the entire rest of the server with their loadout. Somehow they managed to balance that really well.

I like the idea of this Hide or Die game, I want it to be good. I feel like I would have loved Friday the 13th but I heard it just never really got off the ground.

imo the best asymmetrical multiplayer game is natural selection, followed by pandora tomorrow's spies vs mercs. in both cases the reason for the asymmetry is intuitive and it's fun to fight as either side. both sides have weakness balanced by their strength.

the description in OP just reads like a dozen contrived gameplay mechanics shoehorned into the current moneymaking trend. I don't get it.

xfiles but SWAT is what the FEAR franchise should have been

I like the fact that the non killer side seems more focused on just surviving than working on some hyper repetitive task (IE dbd generators). From the vids I just watched, there seems to be quite a few bugs, but I guess that's to be expected nowadays for small games on release. The environment looks pretty good, but the character models look pretty low grade.

I'll give it a go and see whats up

So far the reviews on Steam have been pretty brutal. Tons of bugs and really bad optimization issues which is a thing with the other slasher games. I've been told that their Discord has been kicking out people critical of the game so there's a chance this becomes a drama thread.

this game looks interesting. cant wait to try-

...*sigh* nevermind

With a player base hovering around 10 it's being completely retooled now.

It has been about 8 weeks since we launched into early access and unfortunately our game loop/progression system hasn't been compelling enough to retain a consistent player base. We tried to create something new and unique in the asymmetrical genre by focusing on creating a large scale experience with multiple hunters at the same time, literal hide or die mechanics, and a detailed environment to explore. We tried to fundamentally alter the asymmetrical genre and were unsuccessful in doing so. Although that didn’t work out how we intended, there were a lot of great mechanics and fresh ideas that we believe just need to be put together in a more understandable and polished package.

With that said, we’re working hard towards a more refined and traditional asymmetrical experience while still staying true to the core of Hide or Die with a focus on strong hunters and hiding. Our progression system is also getting an overhaul to better reward players for putting in the time to learn and master the game mechanics. We do not have a set date for when this will be completed, but if you are interested in helping us shape it and play it, please join our discord.

We’re encouraged by the large number of people who have wishlisted Hide or Die and are humbled to be included in Steam’s Top Releases of August 2019 because it tells us that there are a lot of people who want this game to succeed.

If you are interested in Hide or Die we recommend that you wishlist the game instead of buying it at this time. This way you’ll be notified when we’re ready to relaunch the game and put out a much better product that is capable of retaining players and is hopefully something you will enjoy.

We want to thank everyone who has supported the game and given their feedback and discussion in our discord. It has been very helpful and you're the reason we're able to continue working on this game.

At least they listen. Is this the end? Who knows? They have a very steep hill to climb if they want to steal even a tiny piece of the market from Dead by Daylight.

Wanted to give everyone a little status update on the state of things.

For now we simply do not have the capability to continue development full time (which was 7 days a week, 10+ hours a day). Despite having mostly positive launch reviews the sales were just not there as everyone knows. We need to transition to development in our free time. This does not mean development of season 2 is abandoned, quite the contrary. We are currently still looking at some events around the Steam Summer Sale (double County Card progress) and the launch of season 2 with new content and bug fixes. Right now we are still evaluating the feasibility of LMS.

As mentioned previously we are currently looking at converting to a peer to peer server model so that players can continue to host games and organize play sessions forever.

Appreciate all the players who supported us for the last 2 years. We are incredibly happy to know so many players were able to get hundreds (and even thousands) of hours of enjoyment from the game. Thank you.
