How comes Ted Mosby is such a dirtbag?

Ted Mosby is the main character from How I Met Your Mother, and the guy is just a real piece of work.

How comes this guy is such a dirtbag?

He's extremely self centered, the whole show is about him finding a woman who meets his standards, which will change if the woman in question is different and he'll change to fit in with her. Then when he finally meets "the one" she dies, and instead of focusing on the good times they had while she was alive, he starts longing for one of his old friends friends and tries to hype her up to his kids so that they'll accept that he wants to try to be with her again. It's kind of fucked if you think about it. He tells them it's the story of how he met their mother, but it's really the story of how he met the woman he wants to be their step mother. Victoria was best girl though, and he fucked her over.

Perhaps the most egregious thing about him. He has to sell his own kids the idea of him hooking up with an old flame and make them an audience to his own emotional hangups. Why is this freak like this?
