How did C.H.U.D. become a cult classic

it didn't become a cult classic. leftypol was just so desperate for some sort of meme to own the rightoids that they latched onto something shit and astroturfed the hell out of it.

I don't know what they were playing at tbh, chud sounds like something you'd call the ripped jock who's about to give you a swirly for being weird and gay. I'd say that's something to be proud of.

Calling basement dwellers "chuds" doesn't even make sense since the movie's big twist is that it's not the name of the creatures.

pretty sure the chapotraphouse fandom coined the term and not leftypol

I'd attribute part of C.H.U.D. being so popular to the fact that it can be found on almost any free (legal) video service. Ditto for the Troma films which I'm pretty sure can be licensed for half a cheeseburger.

literally never heard of the movie before redditors started using it as an insult

also it's a pretty shitty insult because it's not real, it doesn't mean anything, it's just a pop culture reference. like, who is unironically gonna feel insulted because someone called him a Cannibalistic Humanoid Underground Dweller? it's just weird and awkward, it packs no punch at all.

Trannies and internest maoists needed a word to call people who disagreed with them, and "meanies" just wasn't cutting it.

You mean the same people who say "LOL you can't say red pill because the people who made the Matrix are troons now" reference a movie that subverts their own term?

I guess the bait was too good to resist, due to widespread censorship the far right is indeed "underground" as far as social-media addicted leftists are concerned, so they see it as the perfect insult to describe them. Imagine being some typical shitlib, reposting some hot take to own the Trumpists or whatever and suddenly a bunch of guys pop up to mock you from a position so far to the right that you'd get kicked off Fox News for articulating it. It would be like being accosted by mole people who just popped up from the ground around you, (at least if you think Twitter is real life).

C.H.U.D 1 was awesome but C.H.U.D 2 was god-awful, IMO
But the electrocuted & exploding zombies at the end had to count for something.

Awesome sound track too:
