I have had to purchase three $500 self-cleaning litter boxes because my new kitten who is about a year old eats all the food and shits like crazy and burns the motor out

Robo litter is a scam. They’re plastic and will eventually smell like you won’t believe.
Buy a BIG stainless steel high sided regular tray. Like 60cm long, minimum and a stainless steel scoop. Use the expensive kitty litter. Scoop 3-4x daily and it’ll be fine. Just no plastic because plastic absorbs the smell

Sounds like a skill issue

I think you need to write to the company and tell them you have a cat who destroys a $500 litter box every four months. Maybe they'll pay you to study your cat.

If it's been the same model of litter box each time, I think you should tell us which one so we can avoid it. Is it the CatGenie?

Litter liner gets in the claws
It all comes down to what kind of cat you have.

Some of them dig to China. Some of them think everything is fine as long as all their feet are in the box, and consequently pee over the side of it. Some of them are normal until they're done pooping, and then rocket out of the box 3 feet horizontally in a small cloud of litter.

Clearly @Gaddafi 's cats aren't deep diggers, so liners work for him.

OP, do you have a child? See if the child wants to take over litter box duty in exchange for removing an equivalent chore, or bumping up their allowance.

funnily enough one of my cats absolutely destroys the sides of the liners. he doesn't cover his poop or anything, he just uses it as a scratching post while he does his business. it does cause tearing but it's always so high on the liner it rarely ever causes issues taking it out and putting it into a garbage bag. he has no issues with his claws or anything but I can see it being a case to case basis issue
